Nikon Rumors has posted an update list of specifications for the rumored-to-be-coming-soon, full frame Nikon D600. Notably, Nikon Rumors seems rather confident that the previously rumored absence of an AF motor is not true and that the D600 will, indeed, feature a built-in AF motor for legacy Nikon AF lenses.
The revised Nikon D600 spec list is as follows:
- 24.7MP full frame sensor
- Weight: 760g (850g with battery and memory cards), the D800 weights 900g
- 3.2″ LCD with 921K dot with ambient sensor control
- HDMI output
- Video compression: H264/MPEG-4
- Full HD with 30p, 25p, 24p, HD with 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p
- Viewfinder coverage: 100% for FX , 97% for Dx
- Built-in AF motor
- Probably weather sealed
- No built-in GPS as initially reported
- ISO range: 100-6400 (with Lo-1 ISO 50 and Hi-2 ISO 25,600)
- 39 AF points (with an option of 11 AF points), 9 cross-type AF points
- AF face detection
- Exposure compensation: ±5 EV (same as the D800)
- The D600 will probably use the EN-EL15 rechargeable Li-ion battery
The original rumored price-point was around $1500 (half the price of the D800) to which there’s been no further rumors or speculation. If Nikon ships this camera in that price range (I remain skeptical of it though), I think it will be very disruptive in the DSLR market. If Canon fails to respond in-kind, this could very well be a camera that makes it worth jumping systems for many.
What do you think about these rumored specs and price?
Paul says
As always, it’s about the lenses. Nikon has done a poor job of delivering DX lenses of interest to enthusiasts(to be fair, so have most of the other manufacturers). No fast DX 70-200mm equivalent, no long macro, no wide angle primes, etc. A camera like the D600 cries out for some quality, affordable primes – some of which Nikon already has – and some good f/4 zooms. If they release a 24-70mm f/4, and a 70-200mm f/4 to go with this camera, they’ll have something special. Canon will have to respond with a similar camera. I’d be shocked if they didn’t.

I can’t help but think this is a false rumor. Reason being is I can see this eating into the D800 sales too much. They may be different beasts, but for many that would buy a D800, this rumored D600 would do the job great and be the one many select. I may be wrong. But that’s my 2 cents….

Nikon …please hurry and bring this camera to the people…please dont make us wait like that overpriced D800
tom says
The D800 is a very good price for such a nice camera …
Many were expect the price will be around 4,000 plus tax for the D800 ..
I feel the D600 will sell under 1,800. for those could not afford nor want to spend the price on a D800 … however selling D600 much lower price for more sells ………
this will increase sells for Nikon on FX lens ..
The D600 will surely hurt SALES on Canon 5D MarkIII being a way over price camera
D600 with 24 million pixels Ii expect the high ISO noise level will be very good

I can’t see Nikon releasing an FX body without a motor to drive all of their old full-frame 35mm glass. I think might be their true answer to the 5D2 at a price point which leverages Sony’s ability to build a lot of 24mp sensors affordably. At $1500, if this body supports screw-drive lenses like my sharp 50mm f1.7, and also controls their wireless flash system, it’ll be my next camera purchase. An ISO50 is something I’ve been begging for from Nikon for a while. As long as the D600 has a decent frame rate, my D300 will shortly be for sale. If not, I might wait for the D400 instead.
Eric says
Something else I think this points out is Sony’s intention to produce another 24mp FX body soon. There’s no way Nikon can keep the price that low unless Sony is spreading the cost over a large number of cameras, both their own and Nikon’s.

I think it is veriy interesting, but will de D7000 be kanabalised?
If you pay a few hondred dollars more for a D600 in stead of a D7000, it will be a hard decision.

This is a difficult one to balance out. If the D600 eats into the D800 market is the loss going to be more than offset by others jumping systems i.e. the short term loss for a longer term gain.
I for one would consider the D600 instead of my Sony system if the price is right – however, Sony is rumoured to be coming out with similar specs about the same time – the price will be the answer.

A full frame, modestly priced, basically featured DSLR will throw the entire photographic market in turmoil. Given Nikon’s propensity to “protect” prior lens purchases, you’d have to
assume internal focusing motor is included. Don’t care about “DX” lenses, but I do care about AI-s and other “treasures”. It would have to be priced at or below the current D700, and
above the current D300 (or D400 soon?) which would put it right around $2000. Not everyone needs D4 ruggedness or D 800 megapixel count so a competitive “entry level”
DSLR would be very competitive. As for Sony or Pentax – who cares? Canon may have a full plate trying to enter the mirrorless market and their best and quickestresponse would be to lower the selling price of the 5DMkII. Photographers everywhere win!

E as lentes FX?

It would be nice of Nikon to fulfill our needs/wants for the D800 before going into new models we can’t buy !

without a built in AF motor to drive the “D” seems incomplete

I wonder how much the continuous high and the continuous low fps?

“No built-in GPS as initially reported”
:(((
Whether into GPS, is a problem for manufacturers?
And what the watertight housing?!
