Sigma just announced the (previously leaked) 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens. Below, I managed to capture a brief clip immediately after the CEO’s announcement of the new lens.
Sigma continues to impress, while pushing the establishments in the photo world to innovate. And if you don’t innovate, Sigma is going to out-hustle you.
Sigma is at the tip of the spear, folks.
While it is just an APS-C format lens, it does something no other lens on the market does today. You get a telephoto zoom with a constant aperture of f/1.8. With this lens, you get what is going to function like a bag of portrait prime lenses 50mm, 85mm and 100mm lenses.
I’ve already covered a good bit of the spec side of the lens in my prior post when the lens leaked out, but I’ll rehash the specs here again.

And yes, I want one too. And yes, I know you want it in full frame. Don’t bet against Sigma on that one. Make enough noise and I think you’ve got a shot at something similar in full frame.

I’ll be curious how happy people are with this lens once it’s released. I own the Sigma 18-35mm and it’s a great lens optically when doing Super35 style work or shooting on a crop body. I do wish it had IS/VC, but was versatile enough and allowed me to travel without the 28mm & 35mm all the time. I’ve often wished it was an 18-50/55mm for added reach.
The 18-35mm with 50-100mm for crop bodies may SORT OF become the 24-70mm with 70-200mm equivalent for full frame. Interesting possibilities if using them with a speedbooster on another mount. It’s a shame they no longer make the 50-150mm for crop bodies. Making that 50-150mm F2 was rumored at one time.
