The day is finally here. The long-awaited Sony A700 replacement has arrived.
The Sony A77 and its little brother, the A65, are the latest in DSLR-alternatives from the consumer electronics giant. Packing an APS-C format 24.3MP CMOS sensor, the A77 and A65 use Sony’s translucent mirror technology to keep the autofocus fast while displaying a live feed to the rear-panel display screen or the electronic viewfinder.

What appears to be a Sony A77 commercial has found its way onto YouTube. In the short video spot, you see the 24MP A77 half-buried in sand (obviously showing off its extreme weather sealing). Then someone comes along, picks up the camera, dusts it off and commences to shoot using the live view display.

The Sony A77 was briefly featured on a nomination page for the Good Design Expo starting later this month in Tokyo. The listing confirmed several key features for the new A77, including a 24MP Exmor CMOS image sensor powered by a new BIONZ processor that will help the A77 deliver a whopping 12fps in full resolution stills. It looks like several of Sony’s new cameras have surfaced in leaked product images.
Above, you can see the Sony NEX-7, NEX-5N, A77 Battery Grip, Sony 16-50mm lens, Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 lens and NEX E-mount 55-210mm lens.

More word of the Sony A700-replacement is trickling out. This time, SonyAlphaRumors cites “trusted sources” that confirm a July announcement for the Sony A77 translucent mirror camera and an October 6, 2011 ship date for the camera.
While none of this is set in stone, it correlates with earlier statements from Sony that we’ll get a Summer 2011 announcement for the camera. Additionally, previous info from Sony indicates that the A77 (if that is in fact the new camera’ s name) is expected to be released alongside a new kit lens and prosumer-grade speedlight. [Read more…]
