When the reinvented Mac Pro was unveiled, the jokes came immediately, along with a mixed reaction among pro users. There was plenty of skepticism (akin to the Final Cut Pro X announcement), which largely proved to be justified after the new Mac Pro landed on users’ desks. [Read more…]
Deal: $800 Off Apple 15.4″ MacBook Pro with Touch Bar
B&H has an Apple 15.4″ MacBook Pro with Touch Bar for $2199 (reg. $2999) as one of its Deal Zone deals for today only. This model has a 3.1GHz Core i7 processor, 16GB RAM, 4GB AMD Radeon Pro 560 GPU and a 512GB SSD. As my daily driver over the past year or so (and it wasn’t $2199 when I got it), I can personally vouch for this build as a workhorse that handles Premiere Pro, After Effects, Lightroom, Photoshop and Illustrator with solid performance. Check it out here at B&H Photo.
A Disappointing iPhone XR Review
The iPhone XR is the latest in the 2018 trio of new iPhones. It’s also the most “affordable” with its base price at $749 for the 64GB model, while it takes $999 to get the base iPhone XS and $1099 for the base XS Max.
For a guy that operates a camera tech blog, you might think that I’m one who has to have the latest and greatest gadget. However, I like tech that lasts a long time and I try to milk every mile out of great tech. I still use my Canon 5D Mark II as my main camera (although I’ve been eyeing an upgrade the past couple years) and my 2011 MacBook Pro is still in service as a video editing system. In fact, I think that old MacBook Pro is a superior product in terms of design (and performance in its day) than the newer, thinner MacBook Pros, which have “clicky” keyboards with keys that stick, limited ports, no disc drive and internals that can’t be upgraded. I prefer my 2010 Mac Pro over the modern Mac Pro trash can too.
In a lot of ways, I feel the same about the iPhone XR. I’ve had the iPhone XR for a week or so and its a good phone but it doesn’t do anything special that other phones don’t do better. My best praise for it is that it is faster than the iPhone 6 from which I traded up. [Read more…]

Speculation Over iPhone XS Forced Skin-Smoothing Front Camera
Since the release of the new iPhone XS and XS Max, users have discovered overly-smoothed skin in selfies shot with the front-facing camera. Essentially, photos taken with the front camera appear to have a beauty filter applied. There is no documentation or setting for such a feature on the new iPhone models. [Read more…]
Apple Unveils iPhone XR, XS and XS Max with Improved Cameras
Apple announced its annual upgrade of the iPhone line yesterday. The entire new line takes on the edge-to-edge screen first introduced last year with the iPhone X. Apple Updates MacBook Pro with Intel Core i9 Processors
Apple has announced new mid-2018 models of its MacBook Pro product line. The update now gives Mac users up to a 6-core i9 processor. The 15-inch model gets up to 4TB of flash storage and 32GB DDR4 RAM as configuration options. They also get a bump in batteries to take on the DDR4 memory.
The keyboard has been improved and hopefully addresses some of the problems the last-gen models experienced. Configuration options range from $1799 for an entry-level 13.3″ MacBook Pro to $6699 for a fully-loaded 15.4″ MacBook Pro. You can dig more into the specs and order them from Apple.com or here at B&H Photo.
