A pair of folded lens patent applications from Apple surfaced last month. These patent applications were both filed in May 2014 but only published in September. [Read more…]
Apple iPhone 6s Features 4K Video and 12MP Sensor with “Live” Photos
Yesterday, Apple announced the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, among a number of other new products. Notably, the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus will see an upgrade in the resolution of the rear camera. This marks the first resolution upgrade to the camera since the iPhone 4S launched in 2011.
12MP is hardly a shocking resolution upgrade in today’s world of 50MP DSLRs and 120MP DSLRs around the corner; however, it is important because Apple is also adding 4K video capture. [Read more…]
Will Apple’s Rumored iPad Pro Feature a Wide Gamut (aka HDR) Display?
One of the big rumors for Apple over the past couple of years has been about an iPad Pro model. The rumors and leaks are well documented and Apple’s faithful fanboys expect it feature a 12.9″ display – as compared to the 9.7″ iPad Air 2 display.
I have a terrible pastime of reading patent applications on the weekends and I happened to notice several published applications from last week indicating that Apple is sorting out both server-side processing and device-level processing of HDR or wide gamut video and images, along with the backward compatibility. Get a Sneak Peek of an Early Prototype of Adobe’s Mobile Retouching
In this video, Bryan O’Neil Hughes shows off some serious retouching capabilities of Adobe’s mobile photo retouching on the iPad. He doesn’t name the app but these features will probably show up in a future iteration of a Photoshop mobile app.
I have always been a little clumsy making fine edits with my fingers on the iPad. I have tried using a stylus with varied degrees of success. I don’t think I’m alone in these challenges either. Today, I just don’t know how serious this feature can be taken. It could be one of those handy features used occasionally that is nice to have, but not essential.
Then again, it may turn out to be an app/feature that hits just in time for the rumored iPad Pro. The more horsepower Apple continues to put into the iPad, the more closely the spec sheet approaches Wacom’s Cintiq tablets. And, if that happens, Wacom’s products may become even more niche solutions than they already are.
Adobe apps have to become much more robust on iOS and Android before that happens and this teaser shows that Adobe is well on its way to doing just that.

Next Major Adobe Creative Cloud Release Requires OS X 10.9 or Higher
It is common practice for software companies to stop supporting older operating systems at some point. However, Adobe’s upcoming major Creative Cloud update will require Mac OS X 10.9 or higher to run applications like Photoshop, Premiere Pro and After Effects. OS X 10.9 was released less than two years ago. That is pretty cut-throat for OS support.
Of course, Adobe claims this is all for the good of the user “in order to take advantage of the latest operating system and technologies.” With NAB around the corner, we will probably see what’s under the curtain the next two or three weeks.
Lightroom 6 is a little more lenient and will support OS X 10.8 and above.
Regardless, if you are stuck on an older version of Mac OS X due to support for legacy software apps, then it is time to make a decision about what’s more important to your workflow. Or, at the very least, figure out a dual boot scenario that works for you and your system.
If you want to upgrade, of course, Apple offers a free update to OS X 10.10.
The next major Creative Cloud release is presumed to support at least Windows 7 and up, although Adobe has not officially confirmed that yet. We’ll let you know if that changes.
Apple 13″ MacBook Pro Retina Gets Updated Trackpad & Processors
Along with the new 12″ MacBook, Apple updated the 13.3″ MacBook Pro Retina model last week. Unlike the 12″ MacBook, the MacBook Pro models retain all of their ports, including two USB 3.0 ports, two Thunderbolt 2 ports, HDMI and an SD card slot. [Read more…]
Apple Launches 12″ MacBook with a Single USB Port for $1299
Apple has always been one to push its latest generation of hardware into the next generation by excluding features rather than including them. The current generation of Mac models dumped optical drives a couple years ago, much to the disappointment of many users.
As it turned out though, Apple was right. Most of us don’t need an optical drive in our daily computing needs. We have iPhone and iPads for music and movies, and data is more efficiently transmitted over a network as opposed to burning a CD or DVD.
With the latest MacBook, however, Apple is taking its mantra one step further by removing most of the ports and leaving only a single USB-C port. [Read more…]
