Back in late 2011, I purchased an HP 4530s ProBook for $700 (delivered). (Apple had a virtually identical Mac — for $1400.) The HP’s radio was DOA, and HP paid all shipping costs, getting it back to me in less than 36 hours. The machine had both integral and discrete graphics. Switching between them never worked correctly (often crashing the machine) until I used HP’s paid-assistance card (a review gift from Amazon Vine) to get someone to tell me how to fix it. It even runs Microsoft’s VM system, which I use for software that requires a serial interface.
Unless there’s specific software you want or need to run on a Mac, you might be better off looking at HP’s current offerings before plunking down $1800. As far as I can tell, both the HP and Mac machines from six years ago are “better” products.
