Ritz Camera Store Closings

Ritz Camera Centers, Inc. (the brick and mortar stores, not the online stores) is going to start liquidating stores on Saturday, April 4, 2009 as part of its reorganization process. Over 300 stores across the nation will be closing. As a result, you may be able to find some deals in the coming weeks.

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Ritz Camera Centers, Inc., the nation’s largest specialty camera and image products and accessories retailer, announced today that it will close more than 300 stores nationwide as part of a court-supervised bankruptcy reorganization. The move will leave approximately 400 Ritz Camera stores still open around the country.

Retail inventory valued at more than $50 million will be liquidated at the stores that are being closed. Store closing sales offering substantial discounts on all inventory at those locations will begin on Saturday, April 4, and are expected to continue until everything is sold to the bare walls.

A joint venture group comprised of Great American Group, LLC, SB Capital Group, LLC, Tiger Capital Group, LLC, and Hudson Capital Partners, LLC, will be conducting the sales.

Daniel Platt, senior vice president, capital markets, for Great American Group, said, “Long-time Ritz Camera customers as well as those with any interest in cameras, photography and video-related products will find a tremendous selection of quality, brand-name merchandise at greatly reduced prices. Shoppers looking for distinctive and unique gifts will find these sales particularly appealing, as well.”

Among the thousands of products that will be available at reduced prices are digital cameras and accessories, digital SLR compact cameras, digital frames, binoculars, camcorders and video accessories, and other popular electronic items.

Beginning with a single store in Atlantic City, N.J., in 1918, the Beltsville, Maryland-based privately held chain quickly grew to become the country’s leading supplier of photography products, equipment and services. At one point, after acquiring Wolf Camera, Kits Cameras and a number of other companies, Ritz Camera had over 800 stores in more than 40 states across the country. Financial troubles, however, caused the company to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February, 2009.

Ritz Camera’s downsizing follows efforts over the past year by a number of prominent retailers to deal with slumping sales and the drop in consumer spending brought on by the recession. Major national retailers that have liquidated completely in recent months include Circuit City, Mervyns, Steve & Barry’s, Shoe Pavilion, KB Toys and Linens ‘N Things.

  2. I am sorry but I am not lamenting the demise of Ritz Camera brick and mortar store closing. I have always done ost of my shopping online and as a regular rule of thumb when ever I went to Ritz camera to buy something I was always steered to tne most expensive itme whci always lead me to believe they were only interested in making money-not helping peole with their photograghy. I have always found KEH or B & H photo to be most helpful or the independent camera shops to purchase things.

  3. As a former employee I and my other colleagues all knew that Ritz would eventually go under because the numbers of sales floor and lab sales had been steadily falling. None of us were predicting it to be this soon. Regarding Mr. Franklin’s theory, I would actually made less money on the more expensive items than I did on the less expensive one’s. I didn’t get paid based on how much equipment I sold. In all honesty I could sell a $3,000 camera and make less money on it than a $179 camera. Most of the money made is on the Extended Service Plans. We tried to sell a camera that the guest needed and that provided us with a little (cannot stress that enough) cash in our pockets. Thank you for posting the store closings. They will have the best deals.

  4. I am still an employee of Ritz Camera and have been for 8 years. My store is not one of the ones closing and I believe that the reduction of stores will help the company become stronger, because we can have more product and better sales people. Don’t be fooled all companies are out to sell you the most expensive items, thats how they stay in business. If you like shopping online continue but when you have questions on a product you just bought where are you going to go for questions on that product? Try calling those companies after the sale is over, and good luck trying to get someone to talk to. In my store if any customer has questions we will give them a one on one with their camera, thats something you can’t get at a online store. Not to mention but if you think we don’t know anything about cameras or photography I have two people that have a Bachelor’s Degree in Photography and the others have extensive knowledge of camera equipment and photography.   7. I purchased my Olympus stylus 850 SW at Ritz. It is always been my philosophy to educate myself before making a purchase, whether you’re talking a pair of sneakers or a piece of high-tech equipment it is better to do the research and be an educated consumer before you enter the store know the brand, model number, the specifications that you need in the product and above all know that you’re going to pay what you anticipated before you leave your home. Sure it’s nice to ask the salesperson questions to reaffirm your research. Simply put, do your research, know how much you want to pay, and don’t be impulsive. Unless of course you are a person that prefers to be pulled around like a dog on a leash and then blame the salesperson after you get home and realize you have gotten a piece of crap!

  8. I recently bought a Nikon at the Belmont Shore location (second st in Long Beach CA). Will another Ritz honor the extras that came with the camera: classes and the photo book?

  10. The Ritz in my town is closing also. I dont know much about cameras but I am looking to buy me a nice one, but I just dont know which one to get. I have $1000 put aside to get one. Any advice on which camera to get? I would like to take up photography as a hobby. When I get better at it I would like to more serious with it. I want to take some classes. Any suggestions on how to get started.

  11. Good I’m glad they are shutting down and I’m not surprised. The worse customer service I ever received. Sold me a camera and lens after I paid and got camera home. No lens. I went back and was told I would have to pay another $60. for a lens. Even though I already paid. Associate (Jay) was rude and got no help from the stores corporate office. This company sucks and is a huge rip off. Check out equipment BEFORE you leave the store!! Tacoma Washington

  12. Matt: since you are a store manager…my daughter took our wedding video over to one of the now closing stores and had it put onto a DVD. I called and the manager said he would mail the DVD and tape to us..I called every monday to remind him and he promise to get it in the mail. Now no one answers the phone….any suggestions on how I can get my video and DVD back??? The store was in Landing, Illinois and we live in Indiana…my daughter drove there to surprise us with the DVD.

  13. In spite of problems some people have spoken of at some stores, I am not glad to see Ritz go. Like was said before, as a consumer in the end it is your responsibility to do research about products you wish to buy. The sales guy can only take an educated guess of what you want based on what you tell him, and all he can do is show you what is on hand at that location. And with that many stores, you had to expect that they could not all hire camera experts anyway. But the picture services are the part that I will miss most about Ritz. The new digital developing that they came out with the last few years was so much better than before, being that they now etch the image into the paper rather than just make ink jet images. Even with my little 5.1 meg camera, those images were almost impossible to tell from my film images, even when they were enlarged quite a bit. To have so many print sizes and products available so fast was the great thing about them. We will sure miss them dowm here in Charleston, SC. In a city that gets so many tourist photos taken as this place has, it is a real drag not to have a place that tourists can get pictures made up fast in the city any more.
