How to Shoot Dance with Motion Blur & Detail

December 7, 2015 By Eric Reagan

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpDqh90NsKM&w=700&showinfo=0&rel=0]

In this video from Broncolor featuring Karl Taylor and Urs Recher, we learn how to combine two different kinds of lights in dance photography to capture motion blur and frozen detail. While they are using high-end Broncolor HMI lights with Broncolor Siros flashes, these concepts of working with flash and ambient light can work on any budget.

The key, of course, is setting your camera to rear curtain sync, so that the flash fires at the very end of the exposure, which gives you the detailed subject with the motion blur trailing.

How to Shoot Engraved Glass in Studio with Strobes

October 26, 2015 By Eric Reagan

In this video, Karl Taylor and Urs Recher walk us through shooting a glass with a design engraved on it. They mix soft and hard light to illuminate the glass and the engraving separately.

The main light was simply a softbox, but the light used to bring out the engraving was a Broncolor Picolite and a projection attachment.

How to Rim-Light and Light a Black Product Shot on Black Background

September 23, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Shooting on a black background can create a great, contrasty image. Shooting a black product on a black background, however, can be tough to get right in camera.

This video from Karl Taylor and Broncolor shows us how to properly rim-light a product to create separation from a black background. The video goes on to show how to light from different angles to create or cancel reflections, as well as how to bring in LED lights from a product by extending an exposure time.

How to Capture Motion with Stroboscopic Lighting

September 3, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Check out this video from Karl Taylor as he walks through the setup of a stroboscopic sports shot using the Broncolor Scoro packs.

Aside from the lighting setup and programming the intervals into the power packs, the notion of moving the camera during the exposure in order to separate the exposures from the strobes is a very cool technique. As Karl notes, it prevents the strobe exposure from stacking up in areas of the subject that don’t move as much and it also does justice to the composition by separating the subject across the four exposures.

If you’ve never tried stroboscopic or multi-strobe flash photography before, you don’t necessarily need the $10k+ Broncolor Scoro packs. Many system speedlights (e.g., Canon & Nikon) offer a “Multi” mode that will allow you select multiple flash firings during one exposure, along with a frequency rate and power level. Obviously, they are going to be less powerful than the Scoros but can still produce solid stroboscopic results with proper planning.

Check out your flash manual to see if it is compatible.

Karl Taylor has put together a great series of videos reviewing the Broncolor Siros monolight kit. The above video is the fourth and final in the series in which he’s doing some flash duration and speed tests. The Broncolor Siros can deliver up to an impressive 1/8000s flash duration, which he shows off in the video.

Even if you’re not in the market for the Broncolor Siros, the series has plenty of lighting tips and techniques you can pick up on.

You can see the previous videos in the series below. [Read more…]
