A Selfie Stick Saved This Girl From Drowning

August 20, 2015 By Eric Reagan

A couple minutes into this video, you see teenager Erynn Johns and her dad, Derrick Johns, get pulled out from the shore in a riptide. As they struggled to make it back to shore, a good samaritan swam out to Erynn and towed her to shore with her selfie stick.

Her GoPro camera on the end of the cheap, Chinese-made selfie stick (like this one) caught the entire event on video. Thankfully, both Erynn and her dad made it back to shore safely.

When you’re a the beach, understanding what a rip current looks and feels like can save your life. You shouldn’t try to swim against the rip current, but rather parallel to the beach until you get out of the current – then head back to the beach. Watch the following video to learn more about avoiding and surviving rip currents.
