At CES 2019, SanDisk introduced a new Extreme PRO Portable SSD with a significant kick to its transfer speeds. The prior Extreme (no “pro” attached) models have been popular external drives among the photography crowd thanks to the relative affordability (particularly when on sale) and the speeds we get out of the SSD drive.
While the prior Extreme models yielded up to 550MB/s transfer speeds, the new generation of Extreme PRO drives pushes the data transfer rates up to 1GB/s and take full advantage of the USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface speed. SanDisk achieves these speeds thanks to the use of NVMe drives instead of an M.2 SATA SSD in the existing Extreme.
The new Extreme PRO Portable SSD drives come in the same 500GB, 1TB and 2TB capacity and will retails for $199, $349 and $599, respectively. The new drives will ship in Q2 this year. You can find out more about the new models on SanDisk’s website.
