Canon Rebel T1i vs. Nikon D5000 – Video Comparison

May 19, 2009 By Eric Reagan

In my ongoing review of the Canon Rebel T1i (aka 500D) and the Nikon D5000 (see the T1i vs. D5000 ISO Comparison), I decided to take a closer look at the video functionality of these two cameras since it is one of the headline features in both models.  Below, you will find a review of each camera’s video capabilities, followed by some embedded samples and a link to download the full resolution video files.  Each camera’s kit lens was used in the samples below. Pentax X70 Review at Digital Camera Review

May 18, 2009 By Eric Reagan

DCR has posted a review of the Pentax X70.

Most ultrazooms are running at this same price point, and most have fared considerably well on this site, but the X70 is a great camera that offers a lot of control similar to a DSLR. Not only can the X70 take you from extreme wide-angle to super telephoto with one lens, it does so with the ability to take control of nearly every aspect of shooting.

Canon 5D Mark II, Nikon D700 & Sony A900 Comparison at Photocrati

May 18, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Photocrati has published a comparison of the three mid-range, full frame DSLRs – the Canon 5D Mark II, the Sony A900 and the Nikon D700.

In conventional operation, the D700 was lightning fast in all aspects. Automatic Chromatic Aberration Correction optimized the performance of any lens for class-leading quality. While resolution is “only” 12.1 MP, the D700 images are very clean so they can be resed up significantly in Photoshop or other software for making oversized prints.

Nikon Coolpix S220 Review at Buy-n-Shoot

May 18, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Buy-n-Shoot has posted a review of the Nikon Coolpix S220.

While some lens, LCD, and image quality is sacrificed in the Coolpix S220 for its affordable price tag and ultra compact body, overall this unit undoubtedly offers a lot of style and portability for a very little asking price.

Casio EX-FS10 Review at PhotographyBLOG

May 18, 2009 By Eric Reagan

PhotographyBLOG has posted a review of the Casio EX-FS10.

$349.99 / £299.99 is a high price to pay for what is essentially a point and shoot compact with merely good image quality, so you really need to ask yourself if you will make full use of all those high-speed shooting options. If the answer is yes, then the Casio EX-FS10 is clearly one of the best cameras around for capturing all of the action.

Nikon Coolpix S630 Review at Buy-n-Shoot

May 18, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Buy-n-Shoot has posted a review of the Nikon Coolpix S630.

While the Coolpix S630 is a well-designed compact camera with a positively minimal feel about it, it is probably best suited to photography novices who prefer to be able to point-and-shoot regularly and trust that they will receive basic and consistent results across a variety of shooting situations.

Sony Officially Announces 3 New Alpha DSLRs

May 17, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Sony has finally officially unveiled its new entry-level DSLRs, the A230, A330 and A380.  The Sony A230 and A330 feature 10.2 megapixel sensors, while the A380 features a 14.2 megapixel sensor.  The A330 and A380 both feature the popular quick autofocus Live View system that made the A300 and A350 so popular, along with the tilting LCD.

The new DSLRs appear to be refreshed versions of their respective predecessors, the A200, A300 and A350.  Sony is promoting the reduction in weight and size as an advantage of the new models.  While I’ll gladly welcome a reduction in weight, I think the size of the prior models was just about right. (See PB’s Sony A350 Review) We’ll see if the change in size adversely affects the handling.

The cameras will be available for pre-order beginning on May 18th.  The will come in kit form with an 18-55mm lens.  The Sony A230 kit carries an MSRP of $550.  The A330 and A380 come in at $650 and $850, respectively.

More details in the press release below. [Read more…]

Canon Issues Service Notice for EOS-1D Mark III & EOS-1Ds Mark III

May 16, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Canon has issued a service notice for its two flagship pro cameras, the 1D Mark III and the 1Ds Mark III.  The service notice relates to excess oil used to lube moving parts inside the mirror box.  Unfortunately, if too much oil is applied during the manufacturing of the cameras, it can lead to spots on the sensor.  Canon is offering to clean the mirror box of affected cameras free of charge.

We offer our most sincere apologies to customers using these products who have been inconvenienced by this issue. Going forward, we will spare no effort in our quality management to make sure our customers can use our products with confidence. We hope our efforts will earn your understanding.

More details are available on Canon’s service notice page.
