A sturdy plastic brick of a camera, the Canon PowerShot SX10 IS builds on its S5 predecessor chiefly with that bigger and better lens range, though ease of use has also been improved.

Reports are flooding in from the stable of photographers that have pre-ordered the Canon 5D Mark II. It seems that the consensus is many US retailers will be getting the 5D Mark II this coming week. I have yet to be able to confirm this with the larger retailers; however, I’ve seen many reports that photographers who have pre-ordered the 5D Mark II getting notices from their local shops that they will be receiving the cameras from Canon this week.
Here’s a rundown of some of the major retailers for the Canon 5D Mark II. Out of this list, Ritz is the only retailer still accepting pre-orders for the camera. B&H hasn’t taken any pre-orders that I’ve seen. Keep an eye on them for launch day and see if it’s available (if only briefly).
Finally, I’ve started a thread in the forum where you can exchange info and keep up with the pre-order status of the Canon 5D Mark II – click here for the forum thread. I’ll try to keep up with the chaos as well and let you know where it’s available as it rolls out next week.

Bob Atkins has posted a review of the Canon Rebel XSi.
The image quality is surprisingly close to that the the EOS 40D and EOS 50D, but the cost is significantly lower. Of course it has fewer features too, such as a smaller ISO range, no rear Quick Control Dial, a slower continuous drive rate, a smaller buffer etc.

If you are serious about your photography in general and can afford the higher price, the Canon EOS 50D is my recommendation over the XSi.

Photo Review has published a review of the Canon PowerShot G10.
Somehow Canon has managed to extract not only superior JPEG resolution from the G10’s image files – but also provided raw files that rate higher in Photo Review’s Imatest test than many of the DSLR cameras we’ve tested this year.

PC Mag has posted a review of the Canon PowerShot SD990 IS.
Performance was terrific indoors, too. In a dim restaurant, pictures taken with flash looked great. Subjects looked sharp, and images were noise-free at ISO 80 and 100.
Canon has release RAW Codec 1.4.0, which when installed in Windows Vista/Windows XP SP2/SP3, enables the import and display of RAW images (with the extension .CR2) taken with Canon cameras. You get support for new cameras like the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 50D.

The 50D continues to prove that Canon has one of the fastest (if not the fastest) AF systems, extremely high-resolution CMOS sensors with very impressive high ISO performance, and now offers (for some users, at least) a functional live view system.

It seems that the Canon 5D Mark II has enjoyed an overwhelming pre-order response. Some stores, including big, online stores, have stopped taking pre-orders for the 5D Mark II.
One of the places still taking pre-orders is Ritz (here’s the link). They’re still accepting pre-orders for the 5D Mark II (body only) and kit with the 24-105mm L lens. If you’re wanting one for Christmas, it might be a good idea to go ahead and get in line. Both Amazon and Adorama have pulled their pre-order capabilities for now.
Finally, word is building toward shipping dates in the US around November 20-22. That means some of you lucky folks will be shooting your turkey dinner with 21.1 megapixels.
