Nikon 70-200mm VR II and 18-200mm VR II Announced

July 30, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Nikon 70-200mm VR II

Nikon has refreshed two of its most popular lenses.  The AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G VR II lens gets an upgrade in optics and moves up to the VR II image stabilization.

The new AF-S 18-200mm VR II lens gets a zoom lock switch to prevent the lens from creeping out while hanging from your neck.  Additionally, the new superzoom lens gets Super Integrated Coating to help reducing ghosting and lens flare.

Nikon 18-200mm VR II

The AF-S 18-200mm VR II should be available in September 2009 at an initial retail price of $849.95. Check availability on Amazon.com.

The AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G VR II should be available in November 2009 at an initial retail price of $2399.95. Check availability on Amazon.com.

Nikon D300s Spy Shot

Nikon D300s Spy Shot

A couple of updates on the Nikon D300s.

Nikon rumors reports they have confirmed the July 30th announcement for the Nikon D300s (and the D3000).

The above image is purported to be a spy shot of the Nikon D300s, captured by a Pinoyphotography.org forum poster.  [Nikon Rumors via Neutral Day]

Nikon D2Xs Works Hard, Gets Stolen as NYC Traffic Cameras

July 26, 2009 By Eric Reagan

I had always assumed that the traffic cameras that snap shots of motorists at intersections were some kind of special purpose camera developed for that exclusive purpose.  It looks like NYC is using the Nikon D2Xs as its shooter to capture images of vehicles running red lights.

The above video from ABC7 in New York is a story about a former employee of the company that installs the traffic cameras – he is alleged to have been stealing the D2Xs cameras and selling them to support his heroin addiction.  The video, however, confirms that the Nikon D2Xs is used as a traffic camera, although it doesn’t say whether it is the exclusive camera for this purpose or not.

My mind is racing over the system that sets off the remote trigger on the D2Xs, and the extreme temperatures that these cameras endure . . . .

Nikon D5000 Review

July 21, 2009 By Eric Reagan

The Nikon D5000 sits at the low-end of Nikon’s DSLR lineup.  It is the second Nikon DSLR to offer video recording capabilities (the Nikon D90 was the first).  It’s also Nikon’s first DSLR with an articulating LCD – a feature that has received both praise and criticism.

The compact D5000 steps up to a 12.3-megapixel sensor.  The Nikon D60, which previously ruled the low-end roost, offers a 10.2 megapixel sensor.  The 12.3-megapixel sensor is the same piece of equipment as is found in popular Nikon D300 and D90.  It’s a proven sensor, so it only makes sense for Nikon to drop it in this generation of entry-level DSLRs as well.

The Nikon D5000 is a bargain of a camera at its introductory price of $850 with a 18-55mm VR (vibration reduction) lens.  The D90 is $100 more for just the body only.

I spent a lot of time over the past month or so shooting the Nikon D5000 side-by-side with the Canon Rebel T1i.  These cameras are obviously situated as direct competitors with each other.  As a result, I make several references to how the Nikon D5000 compares in relation to the Rebel T1i.  Suffice it to say that both cameras are excellent offerings from Nikon and Canon.  Each camera truly lives up to the expectations and is probably the best entry-level DSLR from either company to date.

Nikon D300s Pics, Again

July 15, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Is this the camera that is set to replace the Nikon D300 soon?   Since we’re inching ever closer to the Nikon D300s official announcement, we should all be expecting more and more leaks.  The latest leaks, courtesy of Nikon Rumors, come in the form of some up close and unobstructed images of the possible new camera.

This above image is definitely not the same Nikon D300s camera in the image that was leaked previously.  Compare the mic holes in the two:

So, one of the two “leaked” images is fake for sure.  More photos of the current “leak” follow. [Read more…]

Nikon VL1 – What if?

July 14, 2009 By Eric Reagan

I’m not sure what to make of this.  A tipster pointed me to this Nikon VL1 speculation?  Reads like a wish list, yet an informed wish list…

This appears to be utter and complete speculation (so gearheads can click on through, others can move along now … nothing to see here); however, it’s still a nice thought.  What if?

Nikon 2009-2010 DSLR Roadmap Leaked?

July 9, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Nikon may have just had a huge cat get out of the bag.  Leaks like this don’t happen very often; however, they do happen.  If this info, which was posted on a Czech forum is legit, Nikon’s rumor mill is going to be rather boring for the next couple of years.

The forum poster lays out a number of Nikon DSLR bodies and lenses, along with purported release dates for 2009 and 2010.  Here’s the summary version of the possibly leaked roadmap: [Read more…]
