Canon 3D and 5D Mark II Rumors

January 22, 2008 By Eric Reagan

This time from a Canon repair center:

He said that as far he could see Canon is thinking soon to produce a pro camera that would include some of the best feature of both 1D series

15.1 MP (full frame)
14 bit
1 Digic III
Iso 100 to 6400(up to 12800)
AF like 1Dmk III
3 fps
3 inch screen
A sort of smaller 1D body, with integrated grip but not rear lcd panel
1 slot flash card

He also spoke about a 5D replacement coming probably after

12.8 MP
14 bit
1 Digic III
iso 100 to 3200 (up to 6400)
Improved 9 point AF
4 fps
3 inch screen
Improved body

(Source)

Take it with a grain of salt folks. I expect that we’re not going to see the 5D Mark II anytime soon; however, the good old original recipe Canon 5D just keeps getting cheaper. The specs for a potential 3D sound intriguing though.

Stay up to date on the Canon 5D Mark II rumors.

No Canon 5D Mark II at PMA

January 21, 2008 By Eric Reagan

There will be no Canon 5D replacement at PMA. While this is still a rumor, it comes from a reliable source that has been spot on with Canon announcements in the past. He called the Canon 40D prior to its release and the Canon Rebel XTi prior to its release, along with a summary/suggestion of the specs. With that in mind, I think looking toward Photokina this fall for a 5D replacement will be our best hope. (Source)

That said, I still feel pretty good about banking on a replacement to the Canon Rebel XTi (the 450D) for PMA.

I will keep following the Canon 5D Mark II rumors until it is released; however, unless the tide turns the other way, don’t expect too many more updates in the next week or so on this camera. You can follow the latest Canon 5D Mark II rumors on this post, which I constantly update.

More Canon 450D / Rebel XTs Rumors

January 16, 2008 By Eric Reagan

In a post at the Photography on the Net forums, Spencer Boerup tells us his info (joke) on the followup to the Rebel XTi/400D:

It will be the Rebel XTs. Same sensor, 3″ screen, live-view, dust remover (already had in XTi), increased noise and DR performance (gaining of 2 stops more or so claims Canon), support for UDMA cards, Digic3, Canon wireless master built in, improved AF performance and 4 new cross sensors around the center AF point. Lastly from what I hear it should be priced at $599. Not too shabby.

Nothing more than that for now. I’ll try to keep up with the rumors over the next week or so, but it shouldn’t be long before we have some real info. The hub for all of the Canon 450D / Rebel XTs rumors is this page.

UPDATE 1/19/07:  While some folks do occasionally gather and leak real info, others like to kid around in the forums about the specs of new cameras.  Some specs are clearly jokes; however, others, like Spencer’s post aren’t so obviously bogus (especially considering Sony’s A200 price point).  Apparently, Spencer was just kidding (see his comment below).  You got me and several others on this one Spencer.  Congrats.

January 15, 2008 By Eric Reagan

There are some purported sample images taken with a beta version of the Pentax K20D floating around on DPReview forums right now. You shouldn’t put too much credit on this one; however, I promised to keep you posted on the K20D rumors. You can follow all of the K20D news and rumors on this page.

More Canon 5D Mark II Rumors

January 14, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Peted1 over in the DPReview forums says the Canon 5D Mark II is for sure slated for PMA:

I was speaking to a canon rep on Saturday and he told me the 5D mark II will be out at the PMA. He did not have any details but assured me of it coming. He also said there are a few suprises as canon will be bringing out a lot of other new product etc.

But also:

I spoke to my Belgian rep and he also confirmed the new camera will be ANNOUCED soon. However he does not expect to have any in until the summer. (via)

These rumors are always hit and miss with regard to what camera reps really know, but I thought I would pass it along. We’ve only got a couple of weeks left before the real info from PMA starts hitting the fan web.

Heard something from your Canon rep? Pass it along. In the mean time, keep an eye on this page for updates on the Canon 5D Mark II rumors.

Samsung GX-20 Rumor Archives

January 9, 2008 By Eric Reagan

The Samsung GX-20 showed up on a Norwegian website amongst the press releases of the new Samsung point and shoot cameras, which were announced at CES this week. (UPDATE: As of 7:00AM on 1/10/07, the reference to the GX-20 has been removed from the website. It was previously positioned above the photo of the NV24HD.) In the midst of all the press releases, the GX-20 appears out of place and there is no other info other than this photo, accompanied by the key specifications. The specs (at least what I can make out of them) are as follows:

  • 14.6 MP (CMOS) Sensor
  • Sensor-based Image Stabilization
  • Resistant to rain, sand and dust
  • Double dust removal on image sensor
  • 2.7″ LCD
  • Live view
  • One-press RAW
  • ISO 3200

More intriguing than Samsung’s foray into the mid-grade DSLR world is Samsung’s partnership with Pentax. In the previous generation, Samsung DSLRs were basically rehashed Pentax DSLRs. That little nugget leads me to believe that the GX20 may, in fact, be a preview of the Pentax K20D that we’re expecting at PMA.

We’ll know shortly. Stay tuned.

Sony A300 Rumor Archive

January 7, 2008 By Eric Reagan

That’s right – the A300. The photo gearheads acknowledged the announcement of the Sony A200 with a collective sigh and dove head first into rumors of the Sony A300.

Granted, these rumors have their genesis before the official announcement of the A200 – along with rumors of the A900 (or whatever Sony’s flagship will be called). However, the rumor mill has clearly flourished in light of the underwhelming announcement of the A200.

In case you’re not up to speed, Sony announced the A200 on January 6th at CES in Las Vegas. It’s clearly an entry level DSLR at $700 in a kit with the 18-70mm lens. The price and features of the A200 have spurred the suspicion that Sony has got something bigger planned for PMA.

Several Sony gearheads believe that Sony will slot at least one camera, if not two, between the A200 and the prosumer A700. That’s not just smoking rope and talking smack – there’s a method to the madness. The Sony A200 kit rolls in at $700, while the A700 retail is $1500 in the kit (although the street prices are a little lower). That certainly leaves room for an intermediate model at the popular $1000 price point (think Nikon D80).

Sony A300?Some believe that this image, which has been floating around the internet, is a shot of the foldout screen on the A300. It sure does look familiar. Take a look at the small tabs on the top and bottom of the LCD panel. Now compare those to the notches that you see above and below the A200’s LCD panel (below).

Sony A200 (back view)

Similarities? Yeah, that and more. Take a close look at the button configuration. The layout appears the same as the A200, meaning it may be the same housing fitted to some upgraded components. Note the button in the top right corner of the purported A300 shot. Many believe that this may be a “Live View” button. Of course, the A300 shot also includes the battery grip.

Speaking of battery grips, the product number for the A200-compatible battery grip is VG-B30AM. Seems rather innocent until you consider that the product number for the A700’s battery grip is VG-B70AM. Why not name it the VG-B20AM if it’s for the A200?

A little deductive reasoning that you got from that college class your sophomore year leads to the assumption that the VG-B30AM is really made for the A300; however, since the A200 and the A300 share the same housing, the VG-B30AM also works on the little brother A200. Sure, that could all be smoke and mirrors. But where’s the fun in that?

Dan Richards over at Pop Photo has added a little more fuel to the fire with his comment in the A200 First Look stating, “And for those who were hoping for yet another slam-bang Sony introduction, we can only say: Keep checking PopPhoto.com.”

Are we onto something here? I dunno. My guess is that Sony has more in store for the photo gearheads at PMA. Stay tuned.
