Fuji FinePix S1800 and FinePix S2550HD Press Release
Valhalla, NY, February 02, 2010 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation today announced two new additions to its S-Series line: The FinePix S1800 and FinePix S2550HD. Sporting a 12-MegaPixel 1/2.3” CCD, a powerful Fujinon 18x Wide-Angle optical zoom (28mm-504mm equivalent) and an extra large 3.0” High-Contrast LCD and electronic viewfinder, the FinePix S1800 and S2550HD are perfect for advanced amateur photographers who want an affordable, step-up digital camera that will still fit in the palm of their hand.
HD Movie Capture
While both digital cameras have the ability to capture movies in HD quality –720p HD – the S2550HD also has a mini HDMI Port for quick and easy connection to a home theater system. Both the S1800 and S2550HD can also use Fujifilm’s optional HD Player Kit – which includes an HD Card Reader that connects to your HDTV via HDMI Cable for true digital transfer of HD quality and a wireless Remote Control for video playback from the comfort of your couch – and you maximize your HD experience.
“With the rapidly increasing adoption of HDTV, consumers have changed how they use their digital photographs and movies,” said David Troy, marketing manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, Fujifilm North America Corporation. “Fujifilm’s superior image quality with the FinePix S1800 and FinePix S2550HD enables the user to capture still images and shoot video in true HD and realize the benefit of superior image quality and long zoom capabilities with their home entertainment system.”
18x Fujinon Optical Zoom Lens
The FinePix S1800 and S2550HD both feature a Fujinon 18x Wide-Angle optical zoom lens that produces crisp high resolution results throughout the focal range, from 28mm wide-angle to an astounding 504mm telephoto. They also feature Instant Zoom, which enables the user to keep their subject in a shot at long distance by offering a wide viewing area around the frame and then immediately cropping to the subject once the photo is taken.
Smile and Blink Detection
In addition to Fujifilm’s signature Face Detection, Fujifilm has added two fun and valuable features: Smile Detection recognizes the precise moment your subject smiles and releases the shutter only when this happens; and Blink Detection warns you if any of your subjects have blinked so that you can re-take the photo if necessary.
Tracking Auto Focus (S1800 only)
The FinePix S1800 also has Tracking Auto Focus, which allows users to track a moving subject automatically for still picture capture.
Auto Picture Rotation (S1800 only)
The FinePix S1800 has the useful Auto Picture Rotation that ensures your photos are always viewed the right way in playback. Whether you have taken a landscape or portrait image, you can enjoy your pictures whichever way you are holding the camera, as the image will automatically rotate in the screen for easy viewing.
Image Retrieval
Fujifilm has created a new Picture Search tool which allows you to find photos quickly and easily. You can search with both digital cameras by whichever Scene Mode the photo was taken. For instance if you select ‘Portrait,’ you can view all photos shot in Portrait mode, or ‘Macro’ to see all close up shots…etc. It’s a time saving feature which means that you will no longer have to waste time searching through all your photos to find the ones you are looking for.
The FinePix S1800 and S2550HD also share these additional features:
• 3.0” High-Contrast LCD and Electronic View Finder: The FinePix S1800 and S2550HD are fitted with a high contrast 230K-pixel 3.0” LCD and Electronic View Finder. The high contrast LCD is a considerable benefit in bright light and means that the camera can be pitched at various shooting angles to enable framing of awkward shots, while the Electronic View Finder provides even more flexibility for the user.
• Dual Image Stabilization: Long-zoom cameras need stabilization more than any other compact, with handshake and subject movement a particular problem in low light at telephoto range. The FinePix S1800 and S2550HD reduce blur to a minimum with a mechanically stabilized CCD sensor and high ISO sensitivity (to ISO 6400), so that blur is reduced to an absolute minimum.
• Face Detection and Automatic Red-eye Removal: To provide perfectly exposed and focused portrait shots, the FinePix S1800 and S2550HD are both fitted with Fujifilm’s latest Face Detection technology which is able to track up to 10 faces simultaneously, at almost any angle to the camera. The system instantly corrects red-eye and then saves both the original and the corrected image file automatically.
The FinePix S1800 is available in February 2010 at a retail price of $229.95, and the FinePix S2550HD will be available in March 2010 at a retail price of $249.95.

Ticked off! I ordered mine through HSN, it arrived today. I took a few pictures and right from the get-go, when reviewing pics, each one had their ‘waiting’ icon on the screen (series of revolving boxes) and I was unable to delete any pictures. Then, while the zoom lens was out(!) – the camera just died! Put in another set of brand-new batteries – nothing. Now I have to ship it back and HSN is sold out. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED!!!!
Kindra says
Just got my Fuji s1800 from HSN and I love it! The photos are beautiful, the smile recognition is way cool, and I can now capture the beauty my other simple digital cameras wouldn’t! I don’t like the fact that it takes 4 AA batteries though. I prefer the rechargeable battery found in smaller cameras. Even with the batteries, the camera is lighter than many in its class!
sev says
im searching for an affordable digital camera …
@Kindra – dont they have 4AA rechargeable batteries ???
hmmm … 229 for all these features … it is enticing!!! very much! =D
George says
Correcting the main note for these cameras, the only difference beetween both models is the hdmi miniport in the s2500 for direct connection to a HDTV.
Tracking AF and Auto Picture Rotation is a characteristic present in both cameras.

Question: Does anyone know if the dual image stabilization work in movie mode as well as in still picture mode?

limitations over a DSLR:
no lens filter threads
photos in jpeg only
mem chip access is with the batteries on the bottom
no ecternal accessory connectons other than USB so no support flashes or remote mic
with that said… so far im prety impresed with the pictures I have thus far taken the 18x zoom seems prety stable to me
i think unless it prematurly breaks or something I will be very happy with my purchass especially when I figure out how to employ auxillary flashes i hear there is a methos that takes the que from the onboard strobe.
Robert says
Seems great, so far for the price. Seeking to add
polaroid filter without threads. I have polarizer the same
diameter as lens assembly. Why not leave it on to protect
the lens? I like the fact that “auto” itself does a great
job; night shots come out great right away, with the first
shot.
Design is excellent; controls are where they should
be logically, and menu tree makes sense. I hope mine lasts
a long time; this is my third digital, and so far the best!
James Alseth says
This camera has a lot of positives for the price and does a lot of things fairly well: fast power up time, shot to shot time, zoom time. Excellent zoom/quick-zoom features and multi-frame shooting. The negatives are slow click to capture time and it has trouble reproducing some colors accurately.
I would rate overall image quality as average at best (but again you can’t expect SLR quality at this price). View sample photos taken with the S1800 at http://www.glory-in-nature.org/fall-colors.html
