No Canon 40D This Spring!

February 23, 2007 By Eric Reagan

Have you been looking for the Canon 40D only to come across the real 40D at Amazon?
Every Canon fan and shopper is now well aware of the announcement of the Canon EOS 1D Mk III, which we all now want (affordability issues aside). However, in light of this announcement it also appears that we will be without a successor to the Canon 30D anytime soon (like the much rumored 40D). Mark Goldstein has posted his commentary on PhotographyBLOG.com noting that Canon has confirmed there are no further major release announcements for PMA.

He says:

Canon confirmed that these will be all the new products announced in the run-up to and during PMA, which starts on March 8th.

So all those rumours of the 40D and 1Ds Mark III cameras that you might have seen will continue to circulate for a while yet!

So, what happened with the infamous placeholder for the Canon 40D on the official Canon Hong Kong website? I think, perhaps, Canon has brought out one of the oldest tricks in the book for all of us bloggers and gear geeks. Canon pulled the old switcheroo on us. If that’s the case, it was a rather savvy move on Canon’s part by misdirecting our attention to something that really wasn’t going to happen and then surprising us with a remarkable new camera from a different line. Kudos to you Canon, you got us. Thanks for the great gear this year too!

To be entirely honest with you, there are no heartfelt thanks to Canon this Spring, and the reasons may be obvious to you all.
Canon have proven to have the best cameras in the higher end, willfully leaving the lower end to the competition, which, incidentally, is releasing more and more cameras.
Question: Why are we all expecting a successor to the 30D model ?
Answer: Simply because the 30D happens to fall within the lower end range, and with a mere 8MP sensor and no autocleaning system, we believe we have been left behind. Furthermore, because some of us were hoping for a trade-off between the much beloved 5D and and the 30D; something that Nikon, by the way, already has.
I\'m bitterly disappointed at this point, especially when I heard that Canon will not make more announcements at PMA07.
I, too, feel that chasing after the latest models is not what photography is about, and that I\'d better stop writing and start shooting, but I\'m kind of stuck in the middle where I\'m not sure whether I can afford a 5D and I don\'t want to shell out €1000 for a 30D, which is not good enough already.
As an afterthought, mind games Canon seem to like to play on us, like the ever so brief appearance of a 40D on Canon HK website, just don\'t feel quite right.

Luka just read my mind. Very dissappointed with Canon! I would love to own that 1D Mark III, if I had 7G to spare!

I love full sensor of 5D but also want the auto cleaning features of 400D. Canon just wont give me the satisfaction of spending my \"Savings\" for something that really meets my expectation. AARRGGH!

I have to agree. This Sept is the last I will wait. I was thinking of the 20D but knew the 30D was due out. I was thoughly disappointed by the limited upgrade. I know some people thought it was a big deal. I personally didn\'t. Then I heard the 40D was coming out time and time again, only to be disappointed. If no info on the 40D comes out from Canon this Sept, I will just assume they\'ve decided to abandon this section of the market and switch to Nikon – which seems to be quite active in it\'s support.

I agree completely. After looking at a friends Nikon, I\'m thinking of selling all my canon glass and moving if there is no action soon from Canon.

[…] So, it looks like we’ve got ourselves a new 10MP Nikon D40x, which is reportedly the same physical size of the D40, just more horsepower.  I wonder if Nikon took a page from Canon’s handbook and misinformed us about the Nikon D3? […]
