Nikon PMA Leaks – D60, AF-S 16-85mm and More

Below are several purported press releases that were “leaked” on the DPReview.com forums this morning.  If true, Nikon has got a great consumer DSLR/lens lineup for PMA.  Here’s the short list:

  • Nikon 10.2 megapixel D60
  • Nikon 24mm T/S lens
  • Nikon 60mm f/2.8 lens
  • Nikon 16-85mm VR lens

Leak on the Nikon D60?

According to the Germans, the D60 will be introduced by Nikon at PMA as a follow up to the D40x:

A german magazine (SFT) writes in the current (as from 30.01.08) edition, that Nikon will offer the D60 next month.

The guy who got the subscribed edition yesterday, said, the D60 looks like an D40/X and the KIT includes a 18-55/VR.

Further a anti dust system or something similar will be offered. That’s all! I hope it’s no fake and he makes a picture from the news in the magazine.  (via)

Canon 7D

canon elan 7Like the Canon 3D, the Canon 7D is a fictional camera that has been stirring in the rumor mill for some time now.  In the months leading up to PMA 2008, the rumor mill has kicked it up a notch with speculations of the introduction of a lower-end 5D camera – the 7D.  The Canon EOS 7 and 7n were part of 35mm Elan series that’s been around since 1991.  The 7-series camera were the prosumer SLRs of the 35mm film era, which I would classify in or around the same slot as the 20D-40D series cameras in the DSLR realm.  One of the cool features of the 7e and 7ne was an eye-controlled focus option.  “The Eye Controlled Focus System tracks the glance of the eye, integrating composition and focus into one uninterrupted step. Canon’s fastest Eye Control system to date, it works whether the camera is oriented horizontally or vertically.” (Canon)


Like all of the other unannounced cameras that you see on Photography Bay, these are just rumors and speculations of a Canon 7D.  However, there’s been enough buzz on the fabled 7D to start consolidating these rumors and keeping tabs on the latest ones.  For example, see this most recent post about a Canon DSLR that’s a step up from the 40D and a “direct hit” to Nikon’s D300.

Canon EOS Surprise at PMA

Just when the Canon gearheads started to exhale over the Pre-PMA announcement of the Rebel XSi / 450D, word from someone “in the know” leaks info that Canon’s got a PMA surprise coming very soon.

It won’t be like a 5D replacement. Think of it more like a direct hit to D300. It’s just one step, not five, above 40D. (Via)

Could this be the fabled 7D, or perhaps a 40Dn?  I expect something like the former rather than the latter if this rumor is legit.

Samsung GX-20 Announced

Nikon PMA Rumors

Thom Hogan has the latest word on Nikon’s PMA offerings.  His thoughts:

Nikon apparently is scheduled to announced new Coolpix models, a DSLR replacement (probably the D40x update), and three new lenses next week . . .
