Canon Rebel XSi Review by Bob Atkins

November 15, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Bob Atkins has posted a review of the Canon Rebel XSi.

The image quality is surprisingly close to that the the EOS 40D and EOS 50D, but the cost is significantly lower. Of course it has fewer features too, such as a smaller ISO range, no rear Quick Control Dial, a slower continuous drive rate, a smaller buffer etc.

Canon 50D Review at The Digital Picture

November 14, 2008 By Eric Reagan

The Digital Picture has posted a review the Canon 50D.

If you are serious about your photography in general and can afford the higher price, the Canon EOS 50D is my recommendation over the XSi.

Imaging Resource has published its full review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1.

Image quality when printed is pretty close to what we get from the Canon Rebel XSi, which is pretty darn good.

RED Scarlet and EPIC

November 13, 2008 By Eric Reagan

“A DSMC is a camera that shoots stills and motion. Configure that camera any way you want. Select a brain. Configure your body.”

RED may have just changed the digital imaging game with the new Scarlet and EPIC cameras, which include options for full-frame 35mm size sensors.

The Scarlet is available in 4.9MP, 13.8MP and 24MP. The EPIC is available in 13.8MP, 24MP, 65MP and 261MP. Here’s the big one though – they are available in Nikon and Canon mounts. [Read more…]

Canon PowerShot G10 Review at Photo Review

November 13, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Photo Review has published a review of the Canon PowerShot G10.

Somehow Canon has managed to extract not only superior JPEG resolution from the G10’s image files – but also provided raw files that rate higher in Photo Review’s Imatest test than many of the DSLR cameras we’ve tested this year.

Sony A900 Review at Let’s Go Digital

November 13, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Let’s Go Digital has published a review of the Sony A900.

I find it very unlikely that a skilled professional would switch to the Alpha 900. The competitors have too much to offer still.

Zacuto Releases DSLR Cinematography Kits

November 12, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Introducing DSLR Cinematography from Zacuto USA on Vimeo.

Photography Bay covered this a while back, but Zacuto just dropped a press release detailing their link of DSLR cinematography gear for the Nikon D90 and Canon 5D Mark II, along with the above video and several resources on their site geared specifically toward these kits and accessories.  Obviously, Zacuto is serious about DSLR cinematography.

Has a new niche been born?

Press Release:

Chicago, IL – November 12, 2008 – Forget everything you know about DSLR cinematography; this is the future of camcorders and Zacuto’s DSLR Baseplate Kits are the new standard for DSLR cinematography. The new Nikon D90 and the Canon 5D Mark II with super 35 (DOF) depth of field are revolutionizing the industry so much that even RED One Digital has taken notice and is redesigning the Scarlet into a DSLR.

Available now, the new Zacuto DSLR kits: Docu, Cine, Newsman, Indie, and Filmmaker are universal and will work with all cameras and accessories. Zacuto kits allow users to make DSLR’s work much like camcorders. All kits are balanced which is critical for smooth movement and less user fatigue in both tripod and handheld use. Zacuto’s trademarked Z-Release (quick release) allows for fast installation of components like an articulating arm, matte box, follow focus, wireless mic, on-board monitor, an audio adapter, and more. Zacuto kits give you all the components you need for your camera package right out of the box and at a discounted price compared to buying the components ala carte. With various price points, no confusion, and the ability to be used with a tripod, steadicam, dolly, handheld and shoulder mount; you can purchase the kit that is perfect for you and your type of shooting. All Zacuto products are made in the USA and come with a lifetime warranty. [Read more…]

The Casio Exilim EX-FH20 essentially delivers a couple of absolutely amazing features, but can only muster mediocre image quality, and comes with a stiff price tag.

Canon PowerShot SD990 IS Review at PC Mag

November 12, 2008 By Eric Reagan

PC Mag has posted a review of the Canon PowerShot SD990 IS.

Performance was terrific indoors, too. In a dim restaurant, pictures taken with flash looked great. Subjects looked sharp, and images were noise-free at ISO 80 and 100.
