Olympus Evolt E-520 Review at Digital Camera HQ

October 4, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Digital Camera HQ has published a review of the Olympus Evolt E-520.

Where the E-520 truly shines is in collecting all of the features available on the current entry-level dSLR market in a single device, and in doing many of them better than the competition. Where it stumbles is in the basics: image sharpness, detail, and noise control.

Olympus SP-570 Review at Imaging Resource

October 4, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Imaging Resource has published a review of the Olympus SP-570.

The Olympus SP-570 would serve as a great take-anywhere snapshot camera if 8×10-inch prints are all you’re looking for. You might not even notice the pincushion distortion in most pictures.

Nikon D90 Review at Luminous Landscape

October 4, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Luminous Landscape has posted a review of the Nikon D90 – primarily with regard to its video capabilities.

This is clearly a first generation product. Nikon saw an opportunity to add video capability to the DSLR and did so in a simple manner with little intention of creating a new type of hybrid camera. The D90 is a stills camera (and a very good one) at a very reasonable price, that happens to also shoot moderate quality video.

Sony A900 Review at British Journal of Photography

October 3, 2008 By Eric Reagan

The British Journal of Photography has published a review of the new Sony A900.

Sony’s first full-format camera is designed to meet the needs of ambitious amateurs and semi-professionals. JPEG compression is perfectly balanced, and input dynamic range at high ISO speeds is excellent. Tonal reproduction focuses on instant image appeal (rather than something more neutral, which you see with more pro oriented cameras), and the sharpening is OK.

Salgado’s Leica Goes On Sale

October 3, 2008 By Thursday Bram

Photo-Arsenal has Sebastiao Salgado’s Leica for sale on eBay. The camera is priced at $140,183 — plus $42 for shipping.

This camera set was made specially to commemorate serial number 3,000,000 and presented to Salgado to honor the Brazilian photographer’s work. Looking at this camera, however, I don’t think Salgado put many miles on it.

While I doubt Salgado’s camera will bring in the sort of notice that the sale of Ansel Adam’s Hasselblad set did in its 1998 auction, his documentary work continues to grow in reputation. I know that I’m not going to be picking up the commemorative set, I do find Salgado’s work worth revisiting.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 Preview at Imaging Resource

October 3, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Imaging Resource has published a hands-on preview of the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1.

Even with the rather preliminary firmware that exists at this time, the camera seems to perform quite well, and image quality frankly appears higher than I had anticipated.

Nikon D700 Review by Thom Hogan

October 3, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Thom Hogan has posted a review of the Nikon D700.

Excellent Image Quality. It’s not just high ISO that’s good, the dynamic range is the best of the Nikon DSLRs, the acuity is excellent, white balance is better than ever, and, once mastered, the Picture Controls do give you plenty of control.

Limited Edition Kit Available for E-420

October 2, 2008 By Thursday Bram

The E-420 Komachi Kit puts together Olympus’ E-420 body with the Zuiko Digital 25 mm 1:2.8 pancake lens in a combination that is definitely outside of the ordinary. Together, the camera body and lens measures an exceptionally compact 76.5 mm in length. The kit is named for Ono no Komachi, a Japanese poet renowned for her beauty.

The Komachi Kit contains:

  • E-420 camera body
  • ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm 1:2.8 pancake lens
  • Hand-made brown leather case with strap
  • 1GB CompactFlash card
  • Lens cloth
  • LCD protector

It just became available, although Olympus is only offering the Komachi Kit as a limited edition. It’s priced at 699 euros.

More Big Nikon Teasers – Lenses

October 2, 2008 By Eric Reagan

I’m starting to get a bad feeling regarding the credibility of this series of “leaks“.  This third “ad” appearing on Nikon Rumors seems to be some edited photos of existing PC lenses (see comments on NR’s post for evidence).  If that’s the case, then this whole series appears to be busted.

Now, let’s go back to the drawing board on Nikon MX and the BIG news.

Continue the conversation here.
