Win a Free Lens Rental

August 25, 2008 By Thursday Bram

DPS and BorrowLenses.com have teamed up to run a contest. The prize is a two-week rental of a DSLR lens — any lens that BorrowLenses.com offers, with the exception of super telephoto lenses.

The contest is open to anyone living in the U.S. (BorrowLenses.com only ships to U.S. addresses and only offers in-person pickups in San Mateo and San Jose, California). All you have to do to enter is post a comment [Ed. on DPS’ website – link] with the lens you want to rent. A list of lenses is available on the BorrowLenses.com website and the selection seems pretty decent. The winner will need to provide BorrowLenses.com with a credit card number, ‘just in case.’

You can enter on DPS’ post announcing the contest.

Canon 50D Photos With 18-200mm IS Kit Lens

August 24, 2008 By Eric Reagan

UPDATE: The Canon 50D has been announced on August 26, 2008. Please see Photography Bay’s Canon 50D Reviews and Resources page and Canon 50D Official Announcement page for more.

You can pre-order the Canon 50D now from Amazon.com via the following links:

  • Canon 50D (body only)
  • Canon 50D (w/ 28-135mm kit lens)

The Canon 50D has been revealed with an EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens option. The image to the left is an official image from Canon, which appeared on this page [Update: Now password protected] from Canon Japan a third party site.

[Update: As some readers have pointed out, the location of the Canon 50D page is not on an official Canon site, nor is it Japanese – the language is Chinese. It looks like it could be a developer for Canon. I am also of the opinion that this page is related to the leak on the official Canon.com.cn site a couple days ago. I think we will see an announcement on Aug. 25th or 26th to confirm the leaks/rumors.]

Below you will find more official images of the Canon 50D. And, for those of you concerned about excessive noise in a 15.1 megapixel sensor, there’s an ISO 1600 sample image below as well.

For more info regarding the specifications and announcement news (when it comes) stay tuned to Photography Bay’s Canon 50D page.

Canon EOS 450D Review at DigiCamReview

August 24, 2008 By Eric Reagan

DigiCamReview.com has posted a review of the Canon EOS 450D. The new EOS 450D (aka Digital Rebel XSi) kit comes with an stabilized 18-55mm lens. Canon’s entry-level DSLR now features a 3? rear LCD panel that’s capable of Live View framing and focusing.

Image quality is good – with excellent colour, with high levels of saturation and contrast. Noise is acceptable higher than average compared to the competition, but is low up to ISO400 and detail is good.

Read Photography Bay’s Canon Rebel XSi Review.

Nikon D700 Review at PopPhoto

August 24, 2008 By Eric Reagan

PopPhoto has posted a review of the Nikon D700.

Does the D700 obviate the more expensive D3? Not for high-end pros: Hardcore types who find themselves shooting in the Arctic one month and the desert the next will prefer the D3’s extraordinarily tight level of weathersealing.
