PMA 2009 rumors sure are heating up, as we get more “reliable” rumors of a Nikon D700x / D800 release. Presumably, this will be the rumored high-megapixel junior sibling to the D3x – in the same way the D700 relates to the D3.
Here’s one site’s purportedly reliable info on the new D700x / D800:
An extremely reliable source for RYC has confirmed a camera being field tested by Nikon to directly compete against the Canon 5D MKII. This camera will be announced at the PMA show this year.

Stay tuned for more on the Nikon D700x / D800 Rumors.

Dang, that sucker is ugly. Why would all the top-LCD data be on the picture review screen in the sample? Seems an odd choice. I really hope Nikon releases this camera in a photojournalist’s smaller form factor. I really really hope they knock about 25% of the pixel wells off that sensor, bring it back down to 16MP (native double-truck res at 300dpi), and give us less noise. Now I’m just dreaming.

I like the fact that Nikon is catching up with it’s biggest rival Canon.
But is doing rather well by making available better technology at afordable price.
Josh says
“Why would all the top-LCD data be on the picture review screen in the sample? ”
– it can be viewed by click on a button. Even the D300 does that when the info button is pressed.
Pablov says
@Josh: the camera info displayed at rear LCD only remains until you shoot, after that the info turns off. That also happen in the other Nikon DSRLs, too bad they didn’t include an option to keep it on (just as simple as adding some code to the firmware….)
Sometimes Companies seem to miss some obvious and very simple things like that.
Pablov says
Unfortunately we won’t see the D700x/D800 at PMA, but much probably the D400 (DX Format) inestad.
— SOME IMPROVEMENTS AND NEW FEATURES LIST for D700x / D800:
At this time, I guess Canon and Nikon has already realized the importance of Movie/Video, so they will likely put it on alsmost every future DSLR.
The question is if they already designed the next cameras with this feature, because all what we are going to see next months has been planned and designed some while ago.
Due to the lack of Full Manual Control over Video in the Canon EOS 5D Mark II you can find THOUSANDS of Customers/People requesting it to Canon.
So IF Nikon is smart enough, they will enable FULL MANUAL Control in Movie mode allowing the Movie/Video mode to be used PROFESSIONALLY, wich has ENORMOUS potential. (Those who say “no need for video” are just still shooters that speak for themselves and don’t know other people working needs and interests, wich are actually wider; and the market for VIDEO on DSLR is growing day to day due to the HUGE Technical differences with a “video camcorder” -even costing several thousands dollars- and thus VERY different posibilities of use, much nearer to Filmmaking, or PRO VIDEOGRAPHY)
NIKON has NOTHING to loose (and MUCH to win) adding Full manual control for Video, and doing it well. That will reflect in MORE Customers, thus More Sales.
If any doubt, just take a look at the out-of-stock of the 5D Mark II, and so many new forums, blogs and sites dedicated or related to that camera’s Movie mode.
** SOME FEATURES/IMPROVEMENTS LIST:
– VIDEO: they have to improve the Quality and flexibility of the video Very Much:
. FULL MANUAL Control in Movie mode (Aperture, Shutter speed, ISO, WhiteBalance) for PROFESSSIONAL USE.
Also Program or Auto mode.
. Allow to CHANGE the Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, WhiteBalance WHILE Recording.
. Full 1080p mode
. 24p frame rate is NOT ENOUGH for many uses.
The SMART choice would be allowing 24p to 30p fps, set by the user according the need of the project
. MJPG codec is almost obsolete, consumes huge capacity, not efficient
. MIC-IN Stereo (or even 5.1) input jacks, for better quality sound recording. The Built-in mic is useful to sync. the external Audio recording, not for Pro use since it will record the camera sounds too.
. Allow MIC level manual setting too
. AF system or Focus Assistance in Video Mode !! Sometimes is more than useful. (the Future DSLR will have improved AF tracking in LiveView) Specially useful with narrow Depth-of-Fields with critical focus range.
. Allow to enter Movie mode with 1 or 2 touches
– SENSOR:
. FASTER Readout to minimize “Rolling Shutter” issue (so important for video)
. More MegaPixels are needed for many people, and Market (thus business) Demand it. BUT keep noise level good.
16-20 MP would be good.
. Sensor Cleaning System -and Improved one !! (no reason for not having it !!) This can be a VERY handy feature
. KEEP GOOD QUALITY SENSORS ! minimize as much as possible hot or stuck pixels
. MORE COMPLICATED but KILLING FEATURE: Allow to Unmount (or Disable if possible) the AA FILTER.
. ADD a feature that allows the user to re-map hot pixels. That simple procedure will save Nikon service lot of time and money, and of course save time to the customer too.
– SHUTTER:
. Improve it to last 200.000 cycles (for mid-level DSLRs)
. Take care to AVOID the shutter chamber drops oil, dust or whatever to the sensor
– VIEWFINDER:
. ADD a Vertical side bar for light metering (-3 to +3 EV)
. ENLARGE the INFORMATION displayed at bottom. (too much tiny is not good). USE THE FULL horizontal Space available to improve visibility!
.Use RED lighting bracket to show when an AF point catch Focus. Gray ones are not very visible in many situations
. MAGNIFICATION to 0.8x (there were SLR with such big magnification, and that was GREAT)
– Main MODE/CONTROL Dial:
. ADD Custom Mode dial options to automatically restore Full User saved settings with one (or two) touches
– DISPLAY:
. KEEP the full camera shooting information displayed in the VGA LCD (rear LCD) after shooting !! It’s very useful, but currently it dissapears after releasing the shutter button !!
. Add 3.5? LCD VGA screen. (I know it’s more expensive, but so far no DSLR has such a big screen. AND for Movie Mode it will become a common spec in upcoming cameras)
. Add a “Shooting Simulation Display” option to show how the Movie / Still will be
– At MENUS:
. Put the MOST used features at TOP of the Menus !!
– OTHER FEATURES:
. Allow Self Timer to be used with Mirror Lock-up feature !! (Mirror locks up, then self timer count)
. Etc., etc.

About time. I´ve been forced to choose Canon for the money. But seriously, the wideangles are not pro class. I wish Nikon would have done this 2 years ago. I guess it´s the sensor that was the hard part.
Nikon, I long for you my old friend… Come to me soon.
By the way, the house of this dummy looks really good. As small as possible for a second grip.
Pablov says
After PMA 2009 we didn’t see even the D400 we expected…
Not even the supposed D5000 (!)
But according to the source NR we should expect the D400 to be released or at least announced before July, because there is already a book about D400 ready for sale on July
James Bond says
Nikon D800 should be 4k 30p video like Red camera !
4:2:2 color sample rate !
if Nikon do that, no body will never buy other cameras, dominator !
Why not take over the world for good !
Roderick says
Amen brother Zach…16 to 18mp would likewise turn my crank.
Jason says
And I want a built in laser that can seek and destroy all Canon cameras in sight.
Zach Ameen says
Nikon and affordable pricing are two different things. They do still charge arm and leg for thier products specially D300 line with price fixing.
Jenn says
if, NIKON does NOT catch up, fast… i might just jump over to that Canon 5d Mk ii. Seriously, I was so happy about the d700x rumor, that now … i don*t even know if to even expect a d800. my lenses keep me away from doing the switch && i love nikon… but c*mon….
keith says
been holding on for a d700x /s/d800 announcement, but as Jenn says the 5dmk2 is looking a tempting proposition.
really want to go nikon fx but with rumours as they are i dont want to spend out on a d700 if its due update
mzaidi.com says
i happy about this rumor because before this i want to switch to canon using 7D.
Guy says
If Nikon does not announce it by Feb 2010 I am going to take my $10,000 and buy Canon along with 3 new Canon Lens. I plan on spending it on Nikon if they can get off the pot and deliver. This is not a joke Nikon, when I switch I will not be back anytime soon after spending $10,000 with Canon.
John says
I can’t wait for the D800 but this isn’t it. If you find a blown up picture of this you’ll notice they’ve spelled ‘triple’ wrong. At the moment I’m shooting with a 5D Mkii but I’d be tempted to sell all my gear and buy this when it is announced.
Patience is the key.
Paul says
I shoot with a D700 and I love it, it’s a superb camera. I did try a Sony Alpha 900 before just to make sure I was getting the right camera. From what I can tell, the new Nikons with higher pixel sensors are using the Alpha 900 sensor. In my opinion, if your exposure isn’t perfect and you are not in a well lit environment (ie not requiring greater than ISO400) you get noisy images. I think this stacks up with the introduction of the D3x. A 25mp camera with an ISO range of 200-1600, that’s not as good as my partners D300s.
I don’t understand what Nikon are trying to do. Having shot with a Canon5D MkII, I certainly would NOT trade in any Canon kit for Nikon at the moment. If Canon had better ISO control I would sell off all my Nikon kit in a flash and go to Canon. The reason for staying Nikon currently is the low light ability of my D700. Why go backwards, ever? If Nikon want me to stay loyal, stop producing expensive poor performing cameras, I can buy the same ability of a camera from Sony for a third the price of Nikons flagship, it’s a joke.
If Canon want me to switch, look at the low light ability of your cameras.
Rant over,
Paul

Do you have any idea of the bandwidth and storage issues you would have if they were to go 4k?
Gurmeet says
Selling my D300 and all lense…. going for Canon 7D as Nikon is slowed down! Cant wait for a good DSLR that shoots video.
Sony-Canada says
Gurmeet that would be a dumb move…… Canon 7D look good on paper that about it i return one did not like it at all. The color can not match Nikon or Sony
Martin says
Currently having a D300, buying a Canon 5D2. Keeping both of them, people ask me “why?”. I say “why not?”, different cameras for different purposes. The D300 is not bad at all, same pixel count as D3S !!
Keeping my D300 and a hellowa lenses (both FX and DX) I like DX a lot as well as D300 build and IQ.
When D800 or whatever arrives I will buy it too. I´ll never get bored.
wayner says
I have a nice lens collection built up over the years and if nikon doesn’t come out with something soon I’m jumping ships to canon for new years

Sony-Canada? Ya right…You can call me Dusty.

I’m selled my nikon and now i go buy a canon.
why ?
because i’m journalist, and i have to produce photo… and video !!!
and i’m really annoyed by this last months to wait… and read… and wait… and… and … and…
I have some lenses, nikon lenses, and i will sell these for EF canon !
oh… another things… after this step.. i stay with canon !
i’m not a money cow !!!
Eddiee says
I hear ya, i’m a loyal Nikon customer but fed up of the wait, while constantly seeing images and video that fit my needs from the 5D mkii. Gonna wait and see what Nikon come up with and if its not soon, as good or significantly more expensive than the 5D mkii, then as much as it pains me to do it i will swap. The question is, why wouldn’t you?
I read an article lately stating that people rarely swap camera brands, but i know i’m not the only one feeling like this just now and its already happening.
Nikon really need to sort it and soon and at a price that wont make the 5d look and obvious choice

Yes, Nikon has pretty much been producing the same damn 10-12MP camera with different model numbers! How freaking lame. I’ve been a loyal Nikon customer for 20+ years but I’m gonna jump ship if they don’t make an affordable FX 24+ MP body. Even Sony have one! For that money I’ll prolly go mamiya or canon. I know I’m not the only one.
Dave Johnson says
Nikon better get to the Nikon D800 REALLY SOON or the Canon MKII 5D inroads will even erode the most loyal Nikon
users. Nikon NEEDS a 18mp HD video camera at $2,500 almost immediately or there will be a one way street to Canon. Once a pro or serious amateur invests in an expensive body and lenses they almost never go back!!!
Wilson says
I hope someone at Nikon is reading this thread, because I feel the same way as many of you that have commented. I currently shoot with a Nikon D300, and have a collection of Nikon glass… I’m ready to switch to FF, but I also want full 1080p video… like the 5D mkII. I recently read that Canon is releasing a firmware update that will allow the 5DmkII to shoot in a variety of frame rates rather than just 30fps… If I can get a 21mp FF camera that shoots beautiful 1080p HD video in a variety of frame rates from Canon for half the price of this phantom rumored D800 then I might just have to take the hit and switch teams. My worry is that I’ll wait and wait and when the D800 finally comes out it wont even do 1080p or will have only one frame rate… and it’ll probably cost 4,000.00… When I see what Canon is doing I feel let down by Nikon.
Mike Garcia says
I am a amateur photographer and am ready to purchase a canon 5d mrk2 but won’t until I see what nikon is coming out with their new 700x or 800. If they don’t do this soon, then my choice with be canon. Nikon won’t event throw us a crum as to what, when, and how much! Comon nikon! Give us something!!!!
John says
Just sold my Nikon D700 and bought 5D Mark II, better colours! better skin tones! and Amazing full HD Video @ 25p. Canon is in the lead. Nikon losing thier cliental as they are slow. Shame on Nikon.
Deirdre says
I surely do hope Nikon gets back in the racing grounds again. Seriously, this is bad. I’m quite a loyal nikonian but having second thoughts about moving to the more vibrant and sharper 5Dmk2 even though I just bought my d700…
Andreas says
I’m in need of a new DSLR ( I have no previous cameras or lenses).
Canon’s EOS 5D MkII seem to have more than just an edge over Nikons D700.
The reason I haven’t bought the 5D MrII is because of the poor AF.
The reason I haven’t bought the Nikon is because of the lack of resolution and no HD Video. So there I stand, in limbo, waiting for either make to come up with new cameras that cover my needs. I hope Nikon’s new camera will win this time.
Oddur Ólafsson says
Wow, interesting threads.
I used to own Nikon film cameras, but am currently using Canon. I own an Xsi and am using my fathers 7d. I’ve been thinking about switching over to Nikon. The poor autofocus of Canon annoys me. If you can’t focus correctly the rest doesn’t really matter does it?
