Magic Lantern Firmware for Canon 5D Mark III Alpha Version Released

September 13, 2012 By Eric Reagan

The Magic Lantern crew have been knocking it out of the park lately.  The first public alpha build of Magic Lantern firmware is now available for the Canon 5D Mark III.

Magic Lantern 2.3 recently launched for other Canon DSLRs and delivered some impressive and stable new features.

Magic Lantern 5D Mark III Firmware

While the first alpha build of Magic Lantern for the 5D Mark III doesn’t quite offer all the features of version 2.3 on the 5D Mark II, it still presents some features that many HDSLRs want to see.

Magic Lantern 5D Mark III First Alpha Features

  • Zebras
  • Focus peaking
  • Crop marks
  • Spot meter
  • Histogram
  • Waveform
  • Vectorscope
  • Audio meters

Notes from Magic Lantern:

It will not attempt to change any Canon settings or do any kind of permanent firmware modification. This also means the autoboot feature does not work yet – you will have to load Magic Lantern every time by running Firmware Update from Canon menu.

Since the 5D mark III has two card slots, we recommend running Magic Lantern from a small SD card that stays in the camera. All recording can take place on CF cards. The CF cards don’t have to be bootable or prepared in any way, and you can freely swap and format them without problems.

More details and download link on the Magic Lantern website.
