Pentax K-3 Full Frame Camera Coming This Week?

March 25, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Pentax K Side

Recent rumors suggest that Pentax’s full frame K-3 DSLR may arrive this week on March 27. This comes after a photographer testing the new K-3 posted his early report on his Google+ profile, comparing the quality to cameras like the Nikon D800 and D4 or the Canon 5D Mark III and 1D X.

According to specs being tossed around, the Pentax K-3 will feature a 24MP full frame sensor and a max sensitivity up to ISO 102,400. The early report noted above says that noise “only starts showing up visibly at around ISO 6400.”

Pentax DSLRs are something I get regular emails about from readers, so I know there are fans out there just waiting to get their hands on a camera like the Pentax K-3.

It has been rumored for quite a while now, including confirmation last year that Pentax was working on such a camera.

What other features are on your wish lists for Pentax’s new full frame shooter?

I don’t know the Pentax line, but do they have a reasonable full frame lens lineup to support such a body beyond referring to older film lenses? I know that many older film lenses work fine on a digital full frame … but to offer something more complete or competitive, do they have the glass backing full frame?

I’ve always been a fan of Pentax.

Correction: I’ve always been a fan of Pentax, until they started making digital cameras.

I never was a fan of anything digital. The early IST-Series used AA batteries, which provided much shorter battery life and you had to deal with multiple batteries rolling around in your bag. They never really did anything super inspiring. But… Their lenses have been nothing less than spectacular. A few years ago, I considered making the jump to Pentax just for some of their lenses, but I didn’t want to give up the FF of my EOS system.

This may finally pique my interest in Pentax enough to make me seriously consider making the jump to Pentax. At least as a backup or secondary system. I think a full-frame K-Body with a couple of their pancake lenses would make an awesome travel kit…

Interested to see what develops in the coming weeks.
