Nikon has announced the new AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G lens for FX and DX format cameras. The new lens pays homage to the original Noct NIKKOR 58mm f/1.2 lens, while opting for the f/1.4 max aperture to ensure minimal falloff at the corners wide open.
The AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G lens features a rounded 9-blade diaphragm and Nikon’s Nano Crystal Coat to reduce ghosting and lens flare.

I am struck by the utter and complete pointlessness of this lens.
With an excellent 50mm f/1.4G already in the range, there is no need for a 58mm f/1.4. And if you are going to pay tribute to the 58mm f/1.2 NOCT-Nikkor, why degrade that tribute by not adopting the NOCT’s f/1.2 maximum aperture?
At first glance, it seems as misplaced and without purpose as the Nikon 40mm micro. As opposed to making & marketing a new lens, one wonders whether more sales (and Marginal Income) would come to Nikon by reducing the price of their 85mm 1.4.
