We have gotten to the point now where we expect to see the next outlandish claim about how great the iPhone or any number of smartphone cameras have become. However, I’m posting this video of Jeremy Cowart’s buzz-worthy video shooting with the iPhone 6 to emphasize how much craft is still required to get a great image.
There is a reason that most people’s iPhone photos don’t look like what Jeremy Cowart produced here.
Hint: It’s because they aren’t Jeremy Cowart.
Sure, the manual exposure controls and the optical image stabilization on the iPhone 6 Plus are great. However, Jeremy could have achieved these results with just about any point and shoot camera released over the past decade.
While the iPhone 6 has an impressive camera for a phone, it will never be as impressive as the vision of the photographer. It and every other camera are just dumb boxes. They all rely on the mind of the photographer controlling what they see.

Absolutely spot-on regarding the mind behind the camera.
But I will add that I think even an average, everyday, photography hobbiest could achieve much better results and images if they had at their fingertips the studio, the props, the fog machine, the lights, etc. that Jeremy has available.
It’s not meant to take anything away from him, but I think just having access to all the extras like that tend to make anyone taking pictures start to think differently. Lots of “What if?” in their minds…
