Syrp Unveils the Genie Mini Time Lapse Device

April 6, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Syrp Genie Mini

The Syrp Genie is a fantastically simple device for creating complex time lapse sequences. I have a review forthcoming but, as a spoiler, I love it. The downside, however, is that it is rather bulky and costs over $800.

Syrp just announced a new, complementary product, that alleviates those two downsides – the Syrp Genie Mini. It retails for $249 and is substantially smaller than the full size Syrp Genie.

Of course, you lose the ability to program linear motion because the Genie Mini does not have the rope carriage base like its larger sibling. Still, the Genie Mini features the same brain as the bigger Genie.

03 Time-lapse

The Genie Mini is controlled by a smartphone app, which allows you to program the various movements for time lapse and real-time video.

The Genie Mini can also be used with the bigger Genie for two-axis motion during time lapse or real-time video. The devices can sync together and then still sync with your camera so that all devices involved in shooting are on the same page.

Based on the solid performance of the Syrp Genie, I have to believe the Syrp Genie Mini will be a hit – especially at the $249 asking price. No word on the final release date yet, but the Syrp Genie Mini is available for pre-order here at B&H Photo and direct from Syrp.

Haven’t used the smaller one yet, but I believe it is exclusive controlled by an app – iOS or Android.
