Tamron has announced a new superzoom lens for Canon, Nikon and Sony APS-C cameras. The Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC lens updates its 10-year-old predecessor with the addition of Vibration Compensation and improved optics.
The new superzoom lens retails for just $249 with the Canon and Nikon versions shipping on August 20, 2015 and the Sony A-mount version at a later date. You can pre-order it here at B&H Photo.
Press release says “lightest” 18-200mm zoom “in the world”.
I do like Tamron’s F2.8 lenses with VC, but this is not the same kind of animal. BUT for $250, I’m sure someone could do worse than this. Likely a step up from kit lenses of Canon and Nikon.
Personally wondering how this compares to the Canon 18-135 IS STM. Yes, not same zoom length, but similar size and compact walkaround zoom with variable aperture. The F6.3 on the long end is likely useless to me.
I think these superzooms are more usable than ever before. I used the Tamron 18-300mm with the D7200 and loved it. Because of the incredible high-ISO on modern DSLRs, these things are usable indoors and outdoors.
Of course, it is still primarily a consumer lens, but $250 is a “wow” kinda price.
