I saw the new Nikon D500 up close last night and here is my first hands-on look at it. My first impressions is that it is a huge win for Nikon. All the specs look great.
We’ve got some questions about how well the cropped 4K is going to work and the Bluetooth file transfer, but the ergonomics are awesome and it’s actually a very light camera. It’s a big deal for enthusiasts and pros for sure.
Oh, and I found out the real reason behind why Nikon went with the D500 name instead of the D400 name. And, it’s not some superstitious thing either.
Watch the video above and let me know what you think.
As I mention in the video, here’s the link to the Nikon D500 announcement and below are some more hands-on pics of it.

this looks like a very worthy camera at a good price point. this is really what Canon owners wanted instead of the XC10…
for me, the question will be: is it time to abandon Canon glass and move to this or something else? the Sony A7rII/A7sII are great and are compatible with Metabones to an extent, but nothing beats true native glass support.
if the NX1 was not going to be abandoned, I would still be considering it.
will be waiting until NAB to make my “final” decision.

I totally agree, it sounds stupid to say without knowing anything about the camera but I would suspect the NX2 would have been my next camera if it wasn’t cancelled. There was so much I looked about the NX1 and just a few small tweaks here and there it could have sealed the deal for me.
That’s coming for the Canon 7D for the last 5-6 years.

This does look like a lovely camera, but having just completed selling the last of my Nikon glass for the GH4 and GX8, I’m more than happy to stay light, and have the crop.
Hey Eric……
I want to know more about Nikon’s 4K VR action camera. No one will talk price, or when, but you have special negotiating skills, so I know you can get something off the record to talk to us.

I’m trying but they don’t even have one out that we can touch and really aren’t offering much in the way of info. Everything’s under glass. It sure looks pretty though. I should have some more pics to look at later tonight.

I have a question that I hope someonee can answer for me. I am presently using a Nikon D7000 however plan on upgrading sometime in the next 6 months. I am 63 years old and am an avid hobbyist. As part of my photography I enjoy Macro Photography which requires manual focus. My vision isn’t where it was 10-15 years ago and it would be extremely helpful to have a larger brighter viewfinder. I noticed that the specifications for the D500 mention not only a 100% coverage but a 100 magnification viewfinder. Here is my question. I had planned on upgrading to FX for the increase in viewfinder size etc but I wonder how the D500 compares? Would the FX viewfinder still be much better suited to manual focus due to larger penta prism and mirror or does the D500 compare now to be close to the same? In FX I am considering the D750 or a lightly used D800e. Please give me your thoughts.
