Finally! Account Switching is Now Available on Instagram

February 8, 2016 By Eric Reagan

Instagram Account Switching

This week Instagram is adding account switching to its app. It has long been a frustration for photographers and other users with business and personal accounts to log in and out of their accounts in order to us it on a single device. Now, you will be able to switch between multiple accounts on a single device without the need to login every time.

To switch accounts:

Go to your profile settings to add an additional account. From there, tap your username at the top of your profile to switch between accounts. Once you have multiple accounts added, you’ll see your profile photo appear in places throughout the app so you can always tell which one you’re using at the moment.

Account switching is available for up to 5 Instagram accounts on a single device. Push notifications remain account specific, so you’ll need to turn those on or off for each account depending on the notifications you want.

This update will be available iOS and Android users through the Instagram 7.15 update.

Now if only Instagram will “uncripple” the desktop interface.

Most social media apps actually have MORE capability in desktop mode, and Instagram is completely the opposite. I’d imagine businesses could get even more use out of Instagram if they could use grownup computers instead of tiny phones.

I think that is outside of Instagram’s strategy. I don’t know that we will see that happen because Instagram wants push businesses to its ad platform (which does have a desktop interface via Facebook’s advertising toolset).

Interesting. I didn’t know about that.
Too bad the desktop interface isn’t available for the general public.

In the meanwhile I can always use Andy, which is a desktop Android emulator.

But I don’t use Instagram enough to bother, I use it just enough to complain about lack of desktop features.

          Ha!

I actually have been carrying a second phone for Photography Bay’s Instagram and other social accounts. I don’t know that this is enough to retire the second device, but I’ll be considering it.
