The Nik Collection of photo editing plug-ins from Google is now free.
The software suite once sold for $500. Once Google acquired it, the price dropped down to $150. In a statement released today, Google noted:
As we continue to focus our long-term investments in building incredible photo editing tools for mobile, including Google Photos and Snapseed, we’ve decided to make the Nik Collection desktop suite available for free, so that now anyone can use it.
Reading between the lines, I don’t know that we’ll be seeing any major updates for professionals and serious enthusiasts going forward. For now though, the Nik Collection is still a solid package for professional image editing.
Google says that customers who have purchased the Nik Collection in 2016 will receive a full refund, which will be automatically issued back to customers in the coming days.
The Nik Collection includes:
- Analog Efex Pro
- Color Efex Pro
- Silver Efex Pro
- Viveza
- HDR Efex Pro
- Sharpener Pro
- Dfine

Say, I think the title should read “Nik”, not “Nikon”

Nik Is a terrific collection of plug-ins, I’ve use the assortment for years! Unfortunately the free giveaway intended by some to be a real bonus (at this point a terrific deal) gives me a negative feeling. The system itself hasn’t been updated in years, no improvements, and no new product. Personally my feeling is the Google would prefer to get out of the serious photography market. I feel As the various Photoshop programs continue to involve their actually make come a day where these tools may be impossible to install due to the evolving nature of Photoshop components, and Google’s lack of interest.
