The Nikon Coolpix P900 has an incredible zoom range of 24-2000mm (equivalent) and has been a pretty hot camera as far as point and shoot cameras go. Its successor might just up the ante if a new Nikon patent application comes to fruition.
A recently-filed patent from Nikon Japan discloses a 4.4-440mm zoom lens, which would deliver a 35mm equivalent zoom range of 24-2400mm on the P900’s 1/2.3″ sensor.
If you aren’t familiar with the range of the P900’s lens, check out the below video, which gives a good demo of the kind of reach we are talking about.
Have you tried the P900? Would you be interested in an even longer reaching zoom lens?

Remember the “power war” among Japanese hi-fi manufacturers during the ’70s?
Amen to that!
You will barely see any difference between 2000mm and 2400mm.
Now, if they had given it a few extra mm at the wide end that would be cool: 20-2000mm
That’s great but I would rather see them make this camera so it shots RAW as well as jpeg. I would love to have one but nit until they are capable of shooting RAW.
I have the new Sony RX10 III with 1″ sensor and fast F2.4-F4 24-600mm eqiv lens and use my Sony a6300 with 1480mm F6.3 (2220mm eqiv ) for great 4K UHD videos of the moon. The RX10 III has 50x clear zoom if you want a 1200mm eqiv.
Thanks for posting those videos! Really helps with my decision making.
I am more concerned with image quality above 50x than additional zoom capability.
Also RAW although unlikely to happen anytime soon would be another plus.
The successor should have more megapixels; 16 mp is not enough.
Let me make this easy Nikon:
– 24 PM
– 100-51200 ISO
– APS-C sensor
– 450-500 photos battery life
– Weather sealed body
– Touch screen, fully articulated
…. keep the 83x zoom… I do not care about more than 1080p recording and I’ll pay $1’200 for it
83x zoom with an APS-C sensor costing $1200 ! ! !
You are joking; Right? The lens would have to be the size and weight of an average teenager and cost upwards of $120 000.
