Nikon Confirms New Mirrorless Products in Development

Rumors and signs that Nikon will bring a new mirrorless camera line to market have been swirling for a while now. Now, Nikon has gone on the record with DPReview to confirm that is the case with the following statement:

While details are confidential, we can say that we are currently developing new mirrorless products that build upon Nikon’s strengths, and offer the performance prospective customers expect, including the ultimate optics performance, image-processing technologies, strength and durability, and operation.

This was brought about in response to an interview question suggesting the same. When DPReview asked for clarification and additional info, Nikon delivered the above, more specific response.

While the Nikon 1 series has its fans, it doesn’t evoke the same kind of reverence that Nikon DSLRs do – or in the mirrorless world, Fuji, Sony and Olympus. The Nikon D500 and D810 are spectacular DSLRs. No one really says that about the Nikon 1 mirrorless cameras.

Let’s hope that Nikon (and Canon too, for that matter) will compete at the highest levels in the mirrorless market. Competition yields better products for all of us photographers to enjoy. So far though, Nikon and Canon really aren’t competing in the mirrorless market, which is unfortunate because that is where we are seeing the prosumer and pro markets grow right now.

  1. I’m not interested. I have all the gear that I need, and, have stepped off the ” Continuous Upgrade Race” . My bank manager loses me :-)

  2. That the lens mount isn’t changed! Having come to Nikon from Sony (A mount then FE for the A7rii ) it was annoying they changed the lens mount. IF I did go back to mirrorless (with Nikon) it would have to keep the dslr mount.

  4. By Nikon user I am upset, because for three years nikon promises the arrival of a mirrorless with exceptional features. You sincerely annoyed me. Finish finishes Nikon and thinks to produce products with no defects. thank you.

  7. If the flange depth is less than present (and past) SLRs there must be a full-function adapter for F-mount lenses. Also OLED hi-res eye-level finder, and articulated rear screen. Full-frame of course!

  8. Sure, just when I went and bought a Fuji xt-2 ;) !! I’m a long time Nikon shooter (currently D700), and have a TON of glass– as well as a Nikon 1 V1 with four lens (great little camera, crappy low light shots, however….). I’d say PLEASE allow us to use our existing glass with the new mirrorless body….

  9. This is what I’m waiting for since ever in the digital era! But please: F.Frame sensor, a 90º flip oled EVF (like Fujifilm GFX 50S), Mic in, Headphones out and the classic Nikon mount! It will be a perfect camera!

  10. The picture of Nikon mirrorless camera looks like a Sony. I have two Nikons not the mirror type and two Sony’s both mirrorless.
