RED Hydrogen Smart Phone Launching Soon; Hands-On Video

May 22, 2018 By Eric Reagan

It was nearly a year ago that we got our first tease of the RED Hydrogen One smartphone. The Verge is now reporting that the Android-based phone will be coming to AT&T and Verizon this August (It was previously planned for a Q1 release).

As a refresher, the Hydrogen One will also integrate into RED’s professional cameras (Scarlet, EPIC and Weapon) as a user interface and monitor. RED is apparently working on a new channel to find all 4-view holographic content. There, you’ll be able to create .h4v (or convert 3D to .h4v) content and upload it.

Additionally, RED is showing off the phone to a few journalists (see hands-on video above) but it’s not anyone to capture video of the screen since the 3D effect video doesn’t translate well when captured on camera. We’ll see what happens when the phone hits the street in August but the “it’s pretty neat” vibe doesn’t instill confidence that this phone and “holographic display” are game changers.

I’m on the preorder list. What will make this phone (media machine) a game changer is the modules that will come. Stills and video that will surpass DSLR. We’ll be able to mount our PL glass and shoot in R3D before the end of 2019.
