Sony’s long-awaited FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS lens has been unveiled and looks like it will be a solid option for sports shooters, weighing in at 6 lbs. and touted for its hand-holdability with the Sony A9 and A7 series.
According to Sony, the “lens features two newly developed high-speed XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors that drive the lens’s focus group, achieving up to a 5x improvement in moving-subject tracking performance. These motors are supported by specially developed motion algorithms to minimize lag and instability, and control noise levels, resulting in exceptionally quick, accurate and quiet autofocus performance.”

What did they leave out to make it so light ?
Nothing!
If you haven’t tried any of the SONY Alphas… A9, A7Riii and A7iii or any of their G Master lenses which were specifically designed and built for their mirrorless bodies , it would be difficult to understand…..
I shoot ONLY SONY now after 19 years of Canon ( Flagship models )….You can check out the results I am getting on my Instagram page at timdriman…
The G Master lenses are designed and built to deliver the most stringent specifications and needs… They actually do that and more….
To answer your question… SONY are pioneering a revolution in modern photography and they are putting their money where their mouths are for sure…
I shoot 3 Bodies on three lenses from 24mm through to 840mm…. My old bag with the Canon kit weighed >22 kilos….. My new bag with SONY 2.A9’s; 1xA7Riii GMaster 24mm – 70mm f2.8, GMaster 70mm – 200mm f2.8; G Master 100mm – 400mm + Both G Master converters plus 6x batteries, chargers and the usual bits and pieces weighs an all-up weight of 11.8 Kilos which includes the bag!
Until someone uses this new technology they really won’t get it! But once they try the new SONY gear, they will certainly get it!….
This is not just another upgrade to a range of bodies or lenses…. This has been a total inflection point in electronic image capture technology…. The peeps who try it and understand it, all change from their old fashioned DSLR equipment to this mirrorless equipment and the G Master lenses which are also an inflection point in lens technology….
