New Canon EOS Cinema Cameras/Lenses Coming to NAB 2013

February 12, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Canon EOS Cinema Camera

With NAB 2013 just around the corner in April, expect to hear some new rumors on video-related gear. To that end, the latest rumors point to a new Canon EOS Cinema camera situated between the Canon C100 and C300 and offering a PL and EF mount version.

No additional details on the specs of such camera at this point, but there will be plenty more at or before NAB 2013.

Additionally, two new Canon Cinema lenses are expected – a zoom and a prime. Canon’s Cinema zoom lenses have been $40k+ and cover an APS-C image circle, while the prime lenses are full frame and have been in the $5k+ range. I would expect these to follow suit.

Focus and shutter response are very fast for a point and shoot camera. I had a very positive first look at the MX-1 at CES 2013.

Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4x Hands-On Review

February 12, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Canon 200-400mm

Australian photographer Joshua Holko recently had the opportunity to shoot for several days with the upcoming Canon 200-400mm f/4L IS lens. (Recall that we had one of the first hands-on reports of this lens from Jeff Cable using the lens at the 2012 London Olympics.)

Holko put together a brief video review that touches on some of the key aspects of the lens, including the overall image quality compared to lenses like the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS, its use with the Canon 2x teleconverter and the rumored $11k-$13k price point.

Check out the video below. [Read more…]

New Canon 1-Series and 5D X Rumors

February 11, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Canon 1 Series

All recent rumors point to 3 key cameras for Canon in 2013 – the 7D Mark II, 70D and Rebel T5i. The latest rumors on the Canon front, however, point to even further out into 2014.

The oft-rumored high-MP Canon DSLR seems to be trending toward a 2014 launch date instead of this year. Rumored sensor sizes are 40MP or better on a full frame chip for the EOS-1 series body.

Additional rumors point to a quicker-turnaround for the 5D Mark III than we saw in the last generation – perhaps as early as 2014. The 5D X  (or whatever the camera would be called) would likely see a marginal kick in specs as compared to the jump in performance we saw from the 5D Mark II to the 5D Mark III.

RØDE VideoMic Updated with New Mount and Rycote Suspension

February 11, 2013 By Eric Reagan

 Rode VideoMic

RØDE has updated its popular VideoMic, which now uses the Lyre suspension system from Rycote. The new orientation has lowered the microphone profile, and the plastic shoe mount has been replaced with a billet all-metal shoe for extra reliability.

The RØDE VideoMic features a high-pass filter at 80Hz and is designed for use with HDSLRs and other video cameras that offer a 3.5mm mic input. the VideoMic is powered by a 9-volt battery, which RØDE estimates will provide 100 hours of runtime.

The new RØDE VideoMic retails for $169 and should be available later this month. Check it out here at B&H Photo.

More details in the press release below. [Read more…]

Voigtländer Nokton 42.5mm f/0.95 Announced for Micro Four Thirds Cameras

February 10, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Voigtländer Nokton 42mm

Voigtländer has announced the Nokton 42.5 mm f/0.95 lens for Micro Four Thirds mount. The lens features 11 elements in 8 groups and 10 aperture blades for smooth bokeh. At 42.5mm, the lens will offer an equivalent field of view of 85mm on a Micro Four Thirds camera thanks to the 2x crop factor – making it a potentially great portrait lens for cameras like the Olympus OM-D E-M5.

The lens should be available in Summer 2013 with no price yet announced. Based on the price points of the Nokton 25mm f/0.95 and the 17.5mm f/0.95 for Micro Four Thirds, I would guess that a $1200-$1300 street price would be expected for the 42.5mm f/0.95 when it finally ships.
