Nancy Bruno’s “Genuine Men”

August 8, 2008 By Thursday Bram

Journeys in Stories and StillsIn Genuine Men: Journeys in Stories and Stills, Nancy Bruno has done more than catalog the lives of a few men in pictures. Looking through her book, you immediately get a sense of the time she spent in selecting not only the photographs that make up this book, but also the men themselves.

The photographs making up Genuine Men are black-and-white portraits. Bruno’s experience as an architectural and interior design photographer is evident throughout: where some photographers would have focused more closely on the titular men, Bruno has brought in elements of their surroundings. That addition provides a context that a stricter approach to portraiture would have reduced.

The context is particulary necessary with this project. Without Bruno’s subtle hints — and not-so-subtle text — this project would be little more than pictures of men standing around. Perhaps interesting, but not so intriguing as the idea that each man that Bruno photographed was so carefully selected. Furthermore, not every image in this book is technically perfect. Small flaws, however, juxtapose the idea that these are normal, everyday men. More refined images, whether through technical ability or computer correction, would change the nature of the characterization we find in these photos.

Bruno’s Genuine Men project grew out of a portrait project she completed in 2006, Beautiful Women. Both projects focused on everyday people — no celebrities, but instead folks of all ages and backgrounds. With Beautiful Women, Bruno worked to convery a healthier image of feminine beauty. With Genuine Men, Bruno focused on role models with an element of finding men that her young sons can look up to.

Bruno’s medium of choice is black-and-white 35mm photography. While she has done extensive architectural and interior design photography, Bruno has made a career of documentary projects, starting in 1996 with an examination of Canadian life during the long winter.

Free Copy of Portrait Professional 8

August 7, 2008 By Thursday Bram

DIYPhotography.net is hosting a contest with copies of Portrait Professional 8 as the prize. It’s almost three separate contests in one: to enter, you just have to do one of the following.

  • Submit a black and white portrait of someone meaningful to you through Flickr. You’ll have to write a brief explanation of why that person means so much to you.
  • Submit a color portrait with the same guidelines.
  • Send a portrait tip to DIYPhotography.net.

The contest closes to submission on September 4th. You can check out the submissions so far in the competition’s Flickr pool. There are already some impressive pieces up, though submissions seem heavily weighted to the black and white so far.

Noise Ninja Released for Aperture

August 6, 2008 By Thursday Bram

PictureCode has released Noise Ninja as a plug-in for Aperture. The powerful noise reduction software has the core capabilities of the Photoshop version, but has a more simplified user interface that meshes with the Aperture system. The Noise Ninja plug-in also supports the multi-file handling method that Aperture’s framwork makes possible.

The Aperture version of Noise Ninja is somewhat stripped down, compared to the standalone version: it has no preference dialog, for instance. But the capabilities of this plug-in remain the same.

It is available as part of the PictureCode Pro Bundle.

New Book Catalogs Sakamaki’s Early Work

August 5, 2008 By Thursday Bram

Tompkins Square ParkQ. Sakamaki’s reputation as a photographer is based on his documentary skills: he has photographed conflict and suffering the world over. He has documented the painful lives of sex workers in Bangladesh and the destruction of the Liberian civil war.

But Sakamaki’s new book, Tompkins Square Park, is an exploration of Sakamaki’s roots — his work before global conflict. The images in Tompkins Square Park, are older, dating from the years when Sakamaki was first settling in New York City after leaving Japan and a career in advertising. Sakamaki moved to the East Village in 1986, living among and photographing the abandoned and decaying buildings of the area. Those photographs now comprise Tompkins Square Park.

The photographs have subtle touches of hope among the poverty of the area. The book is full of images of protestors and others working to improve that desperate time in the East Village

The Summer Music Moment Contest

August 1, 2008 By Thursday Bram

The deadline for PDN and Billboard’s music photography contest is getting close: submissions are due by August 29. They’ve actually split the Summer Music Moment contest into two separate competitions. You can enter either as an amateur or a professional, through the contest’s website.

There’s a wide variety of prizes, including cash, cameras and computers. Just a head’s up, though: you must have written releases from anyone appearing in your photographs before you enter your work. You may have an absolutely awesome shot of some famous singer rocking out, but if you can’t get a written release, you’re out of luck.

You can see recent entries here, and some of them really do rock.

Photoshop Express Beta Gets Update

July 31, 2008 By Thursday Bram

While Photoshop Express is still in beta, it just picked up a few updates. Adobe AIR has gotten some Photoshop Express action: there’s a now a desktop uploader for Photoshop Express that runs on the Adobe AIR framework that works seamlessly.

Users of Photoshop Express now have the ability to print photos through Shutterfly. While Photoshop Express is still free, Shutterfly sets its own prices for prints.

There have a few changes to the user experience, as well: you can drag and drop photos into Photoshop Express, and resize images with one click.

Photoshop Express isn’t my image editor of choice, but the web application is developing into something very worthwhile.

The Sacramento Bee Adds Photo Blog

July 30, 2008 By Thursday Bram

The idea that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ holds doubly true for the daily news. The Sacramento Bee has figured that fact out and has added a photo blog to its online offerings. The blog is titled ‘The Frame‘ and is maintained by the Bee’s multimedia staff.

Looking over the photos that have been posted so far, I’ve seen a mix of photo credits: the Sacramento Bee is contributing plenty of photos to the blog, but there are also several AP photos. They haven’t quite reached posting daily, but I’m hoping they will. There are some beautiful shots here and the blog doesn’t exactly compete with the Bee’s print product.

A Photo Folio Opens Its Doors

July 29, 2008 By Thursday Bram

Rob Haggart, the former director of photography for such notable magazines as Men’s Journal and Outside Magazine, has developed a simple approach to photography portfolios with A Photo Folio. He’s made creating a very elegant portfolio a matter of uploading photographs. Erik Dungan and Mark Caston, of BigFolio.com are also in on the project.

So far, A Photo Folio is providing two very different designs to photographers using the site. The first is a fairly minimalist design that nonetheless provides a very sleek portfolio for a photographer. The second has more color, along with more attitude. If I had to make a guess, I’d say that the first design is very ‘Men’s Journal’ while the second is more ‘Outside Magazine.’ Either way, the site is definitely looking to provide options for professional photographers.

Kite Photography with Scott Haefner

July 28, 2008 By Thursday Bram

Kite photography can be a great option for taking aerial photographs. When I was in college, I worked on the newspaper, along with some great photographers. We couldn’t afford the equipment that the local daily used to shoot football games — heck, for some games we couldn’t get press credentials. We did, however, have a photographer with a kite: he provided us with some great shots of the games.

Scott Haefner has some impressive shots on his site he’s taken using a kite set up. Even better, though, he has a complete rundown on his equipment that will give you an idea of where to start if you are new to kite photography. Haefner has even posted plans for the equipment he’s built himself. If you’ve been considering kite photography, Haefner’s site is a good place to start.
