Canon Rebel XS / 1000D Firmware Update Version 1.0.6

October 13, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Canon has released a firmware update for the Rebel XS / 1000D.

Firmware Version 1.0.6 incorporates the following changes.

1. Some cameras may exhibit a phenomenon in which the LCD monitor does not display, the shutter does not release, and the busy indication remains lit in the viewfinder.
2. The message, “Err 99 Shooting is not possible. Turn the power switch to <OFF> and <ON> again or re-install the battery”, appears on the camera’s LCD monitor, and after the above operation is carried out, the LCD monitor displays in a language that is different from the actual language setting.

Canon 1D Mark IV – Early 2010 [Rumor]

October 5, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Not the Canon 1D Mark IV

Rumors of a Canon 1D Mark IV have been floating around since not too long after the criticisms of the autofocus performance for the Canon 1D Mark III came to light.  Rumors were swirling prior to the announcement of the Canon 7D that the 1D Mark IV might surface this Fall.  Those rumors have since died down.

As I’m sure you are aware though, when one rumor dies, there are plenty more ready to fill in the gaps.  The latest rumor is calling for a Canon 1D Mark IV announcement in early 2010 or around the “end of January” as one Canon Rumors tipster puts it. [Read more…]

Canon LP-E6 In-Stock

September 25, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Canon LP-E6

Many Canon 5D Mark II owners have struggled to find this battery in stock over the past year.  They have been pretty hard to come since the 5D Mark II was released, and they might become scarce again soon since the Canon 7D also uses the LP-E6 battery.

At the time of this post, the Canon LP-E6 battery is in stock at Amazon, B&H and Adorama.  Here’s the links to each store’s product page for the LP-E6.

B&H Photo

Adorama

If you’ve been putting off the spare for your 5D Mark II or if you’ve got a 7D on pre-order, it might be a good time to pick up a spare instead of waiting until the 7D’s ship out in force, which should occur over the next few days.  Check Canon 7D availability here.

Canon Dust Delete and Mapping for Video Files

September 22, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Canon has a Dust Delete Data process in its recent EOS DSLRs.  Essentially, this process records where the sensor dust is located on your camera’s image sensor and appends that information to each image file.  This file appendage is then interpreted by Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software and applied to the imported images in order to automatically remove dust spots from your images.  Canon says this is for RAW and JPEG images only – not H.264 video files.

The recent surge in video recording capabilities for DSLRs like the Canon 5D Mark II, Rebel T1i and Canon 7D have made it apparent that similar technology is needed for video files.  As far as I can determine, this technology is not available in-camera yet.  From my limited knowledge of video post-processing, it is possible to remove dust spots, hot pixels and the like from video files, but it is not an ideal solution and must be done in post-processing.  However, that is something that Canon aims to change. Hands-On: Canon 7D and 100mm F2.8 L Macro Hybrid IS

September 21, 2009 By Chris Gampat

Canon 7D and 100mm F2.8 L Macro Hybrid IS

After some personal fondling time with the Canon 7D and 100mm F2.8 L Macro Hybrid IS lens at Pepcom, I expect that those who pre-ordered the camera will likely not be disappointed – so long as the image quality lives up to the expectations once we see results from a production model.

Right off the bat, it’s clear that the 7D adds a bit of twist in terms of buttons, which may require a bit of a learning curve if you’re used to the 5D Mk II and 50D. However, the buttons are all laid out very well and it just takes a bit more memorization.

On the lens front, the 100mm Macro lens takes some very amazing photos and doubles as an excellent portrait lens, albeit a bit long when paired with the 7D’s APS-C sensor. How does it stack up against the Nikon D300s, a camera that wasn’t too far away from it (as Canon and Nikon always seem to be placed right across from one another at events)?  Keep on reading for more of my hands-on report on the Canon 7D.
