Panasonic Lumix G1 Review at DP Review

January 10, 2009 By Eric Reagan

DP Review has published an in-depth review of the Panasonic Lumix G1.

Image quality was, generally, a very pleasant surprise. The G1 uses a Four Thirds sensor and although it’s a new sensor that’s not been used previously in another Four Thirds camera, we would have expected at least a comparable image quality to the current Olympus DSLRs.

Canon 5D Mark II Review at Cnet Asia

January 6, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Cnet Asia has posted a review of the Canon 5D Mark II.

The EOS 5D Mark II is a very good camera for enthusiasts who are looking for a full-frame option, and has all the bells and whistles which makes this shooter not only a decent still image shooter, but also an industry grade video camera, too, as long as you have proper equipment.

Nikon D700 Review

January 5, 2009 By Eric Reagan

On July 1, 2008, Nikon somewhat surprised us all with the D700, which would become their killer camera of 2008 (and pretty much the past 3 or 4 years as well).  The mid-summer announcement caught us off-guard and immediately made us drool over the specs and, more importantly, the price.

The Nikon D700 is essentially a trimmed down version of the flagship (at the time of release) Nikon D3, with a price tag of only $3000 US when announced.  Fast forward six months and you can find the Nikon D700 in the sub-$2300 price range for the camera body.  With the introduction of the Canon 5D Mark II at $2700, you can expect rebates and price drops to continue as Canon and Nikon compete for your hard-earned dollars.

Enough marketing hoopla, let’s take a closer look at some of the specs that make the D700 such a drool-worthy camera. [Read more…]

Dell Inspiron 530 & Vista 64-bit Home Premium

January 2, 2009 By Eric Reagan

A few months back, I faced the decision of purchasing a new computer for my photographic needs.  My old iMac G5 at 1.8 GHz was maxed out with its lowly 250GB hard drive and 2 GB of RAM.  I was processing my Lightroom Library off of an external hardrive and was at a breaking point in user-friendly functionality.

My first steps in looking for a replacement centered around the pretty and new iMacs with 24″ monitors.  Man, they’re pretty.  The price tags, however, are not so pretty.  I wanted enough horse power to run Lightroom 2 and Photoshop simultaneously, in addition to Firefox and/or Safari.  To get what I wanted out of my new Mac, I would have to put together an iMac with a $2000+ price tag, or step up to the Mac Pro where I was looking at $2500 to $3000.  Ouch.

While I understand that many pro photographers out there (and I’m sure many amateurs as well) will pony up whatever Apple is charging for its great user interface and intuitive operation, that’s not necessarily for me.  As I thought more about it, I realized that Lightroom is the program that is the most important to me.  Second, would be Firefox.  Third, is Photoshop.  All three of these programs are available on Windows as well.

So, I started pondering the possibility of going back to Windows for my next box.  Then, when I started looking, I noticed the huge price differential for essentially the same specifications.  The price difference pretty much convinced me that I needed to go with a Windows machine for my next computer. Olympus E-30 Review at Let’s Go Digital

January 1, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Let’s Go Digital has published a review of the Olympus E-30.

Even after extended testing, it turns out that the Olympus E-30 looks a lot like its big brother the E-3 when it comes to image characteristics. And although it features a different sensor and increased resolution; Olympus has issues like dynamic range and color reproduction nicely under control and is able to obtain an excellent result.

Canon 5D Mark II vs. Nikon D700 In-Depth ISO Comparison

December 27, 2008 By Eric Reagan

In my prior quick and dirty comparison of the Canon 5D Mark II and Nikon D700, we looked at some sample images taken from these two cameras and relied largely on each camera’s autofocus and built-in metering with very little manual tinkering by me.  The prior comparison also featured 100% crops from each camera at its native resolution.

Based on reader feedback, I’ve gone back to the drawing board for a second, more in-depth comparison of each camera’s image quality and ISO range. [Read more…]

Canon 5D Mark II Review at Imaging Resource

December 25, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Imaging Resource has published a review of the Canon 5D Mark II.

Unless you need high speed capture, and a 30fps HD movie is out of the question, the Canon 5D Mark II appears to offer the best of both of its competitors, with high resolution capture and what we expect to be very good high ISO performance.
