The Camera Raw 5.3 and Lightroom 2.3 Release Candidates are now available on Adobe Labs.  Please note that these updates are Release Candidates and not final releases of the software.  As Adobe puts it:

The ‘release candidate’ label indicates that this update is well tested but would benefit from additional community testing before it is distributed automatically to all of our customers.

Camera Raw 5.3 Release Notes:

Newly supported camera models include:

  • Olympus E-30

This release is not currently compatible with After Effects. This will be addressed before the final release
This release addresses possible artifacts that could appear in Canon EOS 5D Mk II sRAW files.

Lightroom 2.3 Release Notes:

The goal of this release is to address several bugs and provide additional camera raw support. A list of issues fixed in this release is included below:

Photography at the Inauguration

January 20, 2009 By Eric Reagan

A couple interesting photography notes from the Inauguration today:

Mashable has a nice piece on the coming of age of Microsoft’s Photosynth, as it was featured on CNN.

Additionally, Stephen Shankland over at Cnet has shows off satellite images of the Capitol Building and the crowd of onlookers.

I know there is a ton of other photography-related snippets in and around the Inauguration (man, I hate typing that word – it’s hard), but I found these two particularly noteworthy.  It’s always interesting for me to see how photography help makes the world go round.

Have you seen anything else related to photography that sticks out from the crowd?

Were you at the Inauguration?  Care to share some links to your photos in the comments, or put’em up in the forum?

2am Collection from Acme Made

January 17, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Acme Made has announced a few new camera cases that I think my wife would call chic.  Unforntunately (or, or fortunately – depending on how you see it), I’m not a big judge of fashion.  However, when my wife saw the new SLIP Pouch from Acme Made, she made cooing noises that I generally associate with trips to the mall.  I took this as a positive opinion on her behalf.

These new cases are surprisingly affordable and will be available in March 2009.

Gentlemen, I would not be caught carrying one of these camera cases; however, you may be otherwise inclined – or, perhaps, like me, you should pick one up for your better half.

Ladies, please judge accordingly in the comments.

More details and images, which were pulled from Acme Made’s press sheet, appear below. [Read more…]

Canon PowerShot A480

January 15, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Canon has replaced its PowerShot A470 with the new PowerShot A480.  The A480 features a 10 megapixel sensor and 3.3x optical zoom.  It is situated as a lower-end consumer grade point and shoot camera that’s no frills and comes with a reasonable price. No word on US price yet, but the A470 that is replaces is $81.95 at Amazon.com right now, and it came to market at $99.95 I believe.

It has no image stabilization and comes with the standard bells and whistles like face detection autofocus.  The A480 is powered by AA batteries (a good thing in my opinion).

See the following press release for more details. [Read more…]

Canon 5D Mark II is Official Camera of the President

January 15, 2009 By Eric Reagan

For the first time, the official photo of the President of the United States was taken with a digital camera . . . the Canon EOS 5D Mark II to be exact.  Pete Souza, the new White House photographer, is a Canon shooter.  Previously, he shot with the 5D.  Since being named the “First Photographer”, however, he picked up the 5D Mark II.  More details at Change.gov.

I found this rather ironic while working on my 5D Mark II review today that I came across this news.  I’ll have the review out next week I hope.  However, if it’s good enough for the President, it’s probably good enough for you too.

For now, stay tuned to Photography Bay’s Canon 5D Mark II Reviews and Resources for the latest.
