Project 10-50

October 12, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Interesting in shaking things up in your photography? How about shaking things up by using a single, 50mm lens for a year?

That’s what Project 10-50 is all about – “making pictures of the year 2010 with the use of 50mm prime lenses only.”

It doesn’t matter the brand of your camera or the model of your lens – so long as it’s 50mm in length.  And, we’re big fans of the 50mm lenses.

Here’s the pitch from the Project 10-50 crew to you:

We’ve just started a new initiative: Project 10-50.

It’s all about photographing with nothing but 50mm prime lenses – one year long: 2010 (hence 10-50 …).

Any brand camera or lens will do – as long as it’s a 50mm prime only. Besides beautiful stunning pictures we’re looking for something to learn from eachother as well.  So every picture posted has to contain the EXIF data and if possible ‘the story’ behind it. We want to read how people had to ‘work’ to ‘make’ the picture instead of just ‘taking’ it with a comfortable super-dooper-zoom lens.

The word is starting to spread already and people are starting to join.

Will you help us making it a little bigger too?

Sonic Photo, Broadway Photo, Best Price Camera and Other Scammers Get Busted

June 25, 2009 By Eric Reagan

The New York Attorney General has busted these scam shops for their nefarious bait & switch tactics, which result in heartache stories across the photography community year in and out.

While they’re getting off with a $765,000 settlement after being investigated by the New York AG, hopefully the officials will keep a closer eye on them.  This isn’t the first time Broadway Photo has been on the wrong side of the law though.

Name Your Dream Assignment

March 11, 2009 By Eric Reagan

I see Thomas Hawk write on a regular basis that “the best photographs in the world have yet to be taken.”  I think that statement pretty much sums up the Name Your Dream Assignment contest.  This is a unique photo contest in which the contestants have yet to take their dream photos on their dream assignment.

Name Your Dream Assignment is not looking for the best photo; they’re looking for the best idea. The most creative, inspiring, never-before-seen photo shoot idea.

Everyone will have a chance to vote on their favorite idea, and a panel of judges will select from the top 20 most creative and inspiring suggestions.

And it’s the idea that counts. You don’t need to be a pro photographer, or even to have a portfolio. All you need is a dream.

The winner will get a $50,000 cash award plus lots of goodies including a Lenovo ThinkPad W700 notebook computer with Windows Vista, specially designed for photographers.

Public voting ends April 3, so the sooner you enter the better chance you’ll have for getting those votes. Learn more about Name Your Dream Assignment.

GE has released 9 new point and shoot cameras touting at least 9 megapixels and featuring bells and whistles such as a touch screen LCD, panoramic shooting modes and a waterproof version.  The cameras have a very “me too” kind of feel in an industry that is crowded with multiple models from the big, established companies.  Sorry, but nothing really makes them stand out from the huge crowd.  Additional details are below.
