Canon 40D Review at e-Photographia

September 26, 2007 By Eric Reagan

e-Photographia has just published a review of the Canon 40D:

It only took a few shots to notice the difference in focusing. Focusing is faster and very accurate. I took more than 500 shots that night, some of them in burst mode with 6.5 fps, and the AF system proved to be equal to that of Canon 1-series cameras. The central point worked well even without flash. I can’t think of a single other camera in this class with such a great AF system.

Photographer vs. Soccer Mom

September 24, 2007 By Eric Reagan

Here’s one worth a read. A poster over at DPReview.com was “testing” his equipment at kids’ soccer games and was confronted by a soccer mom. This is his account:

Went to soccer games testing my equipment. When I finished one field moving to another one, one mom asked me if I have permit to shoot, I said no. So she wanted me to give her all my images and leave. I told her no way. They want my business card, I don’t want them to harrass me so I said no. I’m not sure if her husband shoots soccer and don’t want any completition. I told them I am a pro sports shooter and just here to test my equipment. I told them I know the vendor that shoots their league and I don’t want to mess up his business so I won’t give them the images. She said if I don’t they’ll call the police. I said go ahead and they called the police. I heard the father trying to explain the serious this could be. I stayed there until he finished his call. The father at this point change his attitude trying to explain they were just trying to protect their kids. I went on to shoot the other team until the police tapped on my shoulder.

The police asked why I shoot, I told them I’m here to test my equipment. He ask to see my images, after reviewed 300+ images he said no problem. He asked me for a business card so I gave him one. He then asked if I want to call it a day. I said not right now I don’t want to give them the impression I was escorted out. I also told the police to tell the moms to cool off not to over-reacting and harrass me by asking my images with bad attitude. So I stayed there for another hour shooting away.

After the first game I met the father calling the police, he was much nicer, no problem any more. Later I gave it a thought, maybe I should show the parents some great shots I took of their kids, but I doubt it will make any difference.

Any suggestions?

Things get interesting after this. There’s a lot of differing opinions over there – some were glad he stood his ground and others would have cold-cocked him. Check these links out and tell me what you would have done.

This is a probably a good time to plug my post: 5 Things You Should Do When Confronted By Police.

Sony Alpha ?700 Review

September 24, 2007 By Eric Reagan

PhotoReview has posted a full review of the Sony ?700:

Despite taking a while to produce this camera, in the DSLR-A700 Sony has delivered a camera that enthusiasts can enjoy with features that will be of value to many professional photographers. A nice step up from the A100, it goes head-to-head against Canon’s recently-released EOS 40D and Nikon’s D300, which is expected in November.

Canon 40D Review at Photography Blog

September 23, 2007 By Eric Reagan

The 40D has made its way well into the market stream now. Like several other sites, Photography Blog has posted a review of the Canon 40D:

It’s true that it costs more than other 10-megapixel cameras, but it’s also much more professionally-orientated. Its nearest rival in the semi-pro market would be the newly-announced Nikon D300, but the list price is £1300 for the body only, and for that money you could get an EOS 40D and Canon’s 17-85mm image-stabilised lens and have change to spare. The Canon EOS 40D’s strength doesn’t lie in any great technological breakthrough but in its professional appeal and its sheer value for money.

Are You Using Zooomr Yet?

September 22, 2007 By Eric Reagan

If you haven’t heard of Zooomr (that’s not a typo – 3 O’s), it’s high time that you did. Flickr’s cool and all, but Zooomr picks up where Flickr leaves you hanging and then shifts gears into overdrive. And it’s still beta!

So what makes Zooomr so hot? Here’s 5 great features that will get you hooked:

1. No upload/bandwidth limit. This is a biggie! I’m so tired of downsizing my photos for flickr so I don’t exceed my upload bandwidth. Also, flickr limits the number of photos you can have in your photoset, unless you have a “pro” account, which brings me to the second great feature.

2. It’s free. That’s right, there’s no limit to your upload or bandwidth usage AND it’s free. There are some bells and whistles that you can get for an extra fee (hey, they’ve gotta make a buck or two somehow).

3. Social media meets photo sharing. I’m not a real pro at social media, but some of you social butterflies out there will really dig (no pun intended) the Zipline feature incorporated into every user’s account. Basically, Zipline allows you to keep in touch with what your contacts are doing, as they’re doing it.

4. SmartSets are cool and easy. “Rather than relying on manual set building, SmartSets allows you to use advance filters to create dynamic sets. You can organize SmartSets by many different criteria. To start with you will determine what kind of SmartSet you want to build. Criteria that can be used includes labels (i.e. tags), views, GeoTags, PeopleTags, Date Taken, Date Uploaded. The most common type of SmartSet is done by tag.” Tags is the way I do it. I was blown away by the simplicity of SmartSets the first time I created one.

5. Upload is smooth and simple – even for large batches. The uploading interface on Zooomr is gravy smooth. The interface is as intuitive as a Mac and you get great and simple visual feedback on your uploads, file by file.

Did I miss anything? Sure I did. The crew over at Zooomr have great things in store for its users. I’ve only touched on the tip of the iceberg. If I’ve piqued your interest, then head on over and check it out now . . . it’s free. After you’ve signed up, feel free to add me as a contact.

I’ll see you in my Zipline. ;)
