Canon 40D Pricing and Availability Leaked

August 8, 2007 By Eric Reagan

(via Zee’s Photography Blog)

Looks like the pricing and availability of the Canon 40D is out in the open now. If you look at the Best Buy inventory report above, it shows the Canon 40D “in-stock” on September 2, 2007. If that’s the price card for the 40D, the you’re looking at a whoppin’ $1600 for the new camera, presumably with a kit lens.

Also on Gizmodo.

Looks like it started on (where else) DPReview.com.

After digging in the forum a bit, it appears that camera includes the Canon EF 28-135 IS lens.

Makin’ the Gap

Originally uploaded by hawridger.

Here’s another shot from the 2007 NORBA Showdown at Sugar. This particular shot comes from part of the downhill course where there riders clear roughly a 10′ gap over a creek. Needless to say, they’re moving on at this point. That’s where my problem arose though.

Thankfully, it didn’t rain (much) at the race or I probably would have packed up my Canon Rebel XT and headed home. However, the conditions were less than ideal for shooting action shots. It was plenty overcast, this part of the course was complete under cover of trees, and it was rather foggy at times due to the elevation.

I think I would have felt fine without the fog; however, the fog really caused some lighting issues that I didn’t know how to resolve on-site. This left me with several photos that seemed washed out – like a white film over the whole image due to the moisture particles reflecting the flash. The only solution that I could come up with was in Lightroom – and this is where shooting RAW, I think, saved my butt. I was able to boost contrast and blacks enough to resolve the fog issue on the image for most shots so that they are now usable.

All of the photos at this creek jump has some fog in them (see gallery). Some more than others. I am satisfied with the post-processing results; however, I’d like to know what some of you guys (and gals) think about my lighting quagmire on-site. Is there a better solution for shooting in fog with my setup (particularly, you strobist wizards)? If not, is there something else that I need in order to be prepared for these conditions?

My setup: Canon Rebel XT, 18-55 Kit Lens for wides & Sigma 70-200 f/2.8; EX 420 Speedlight.

My settings: Shutter priority — Wides – roughly 1/60s to 1/125s with panning — Zooms – 1/200s minimum; ISO 400 (I really don’t like the grain above 400)

Nikon D3 and D300 – Imminent Release Pending?

August 7, 2007 By Eric Reagan

Several forum posters are alleging the release of the Nikon D3 and D300 is imminent.

Just spoke with a relation of mine at one of Europe’s major Nikon distributors and D300 is coming very soon (she mentioned end of this month) with the specifications as already mentioned in Chasseur d’Images, 12Mp & D2X AF system.

Out of respect for my source I can’t mention any names or more specifications.

Late August is now pretty busy – Pentax European press conference, 23rd; Canon Autumn Collection launch London, 21st; Nikon London launch, 24th. All announced, press contacted, RSVPs done etc.

I just got a Nikon Free prize draw competition leaflet, to be drawn on 31st October for which the prize is your “ultimate Nikon Digital SLR camera” a “D2Xs or equivalent”.

World Athletics Championships begin on the 25th August… in Nikon’s home country… with Nikon as an offical sponsor. My understanding is that Nikon have a history of launching high profile products at major sporting events, instead of at photographic exhibitions.

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, the DPReview.com forums is a major source of the rumors that we see. Part of the reason is because the forums are so active. You can view the Nikon threads page here.

You can keep track of all the juice on the Nikon D3 on this page and the D300 on this page.

Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS Rumor

Tied to the Canon 40D rumors is the purported release of a EF-S 18-55mm IS kit lens.  That would be rather enticing…  Check it out here.

Head of the Pack

Head of the Pack

Originally uploaded by hawridger.

Here’s a shot I took with my Canon Rebel XT and Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 at the NORBA Showdown at Sugar on Sunday, June 29, 2007. This is Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski (aka, JHK) of Subaru-Gary Fisher) at the front of the pack. He went on to win this short track cross-country race with a killer final descent pass after Todd Wells attacked on the climb. If you’re interested, you can get the whole scoop on Velonews.

If you haven’t guessed already, I really dig cycling. So, give me a camera and a bike race and I’m in heaven. This is my second year spectating/shooting at the NORBA Showdown at Sugar. While I caught the pros this year, there was a lot more racing and wrecking going on last year when I attended on Saturday.

For me, cycling is a great spectator sport because of the access opportunities that you get. I generally can’t go up to guys at, say, a pro football game and shoot the breeze with them after a quarter. With cycling, be it road, mountain , downhill or whatever, I can usually get a pro rider to spare a few seconds to pose for some pictures or an autograph. Similarly, the course is extremely spectator/photographer-friendly. I’ve really got my choice of where to shoot from at most venues.

You can check out some more of my cycling pics here on smugmug and here on flickr.

August 3, 2007 By Eric Reagan

Everybody and their brother is reporting on these latest images that look like true studio shots of the Canon 40D that originated over at slrclub. They’re no longer up over there, but it looks like there’s a few million of these floating around on the web now.

Nikon’s Outselling Canon?

August 1, 2007 By Eric Reagan

Somehow I missed this:

As of December 2006, Nikon had a 47% share of the Japanese DSLR market compared to Canon’s 35%.

Join in on the rumor mill with the usual suspects on DPReview.com.

Chasseur d’Images says readers will be reading about the Nikon D300 and Canon 40D side-by-side in September. (via -you guessed it- DPReview.com forums)

Is Canon really scheduled to make press releases on August 20th?

More word of a Nikon D3 release SOON:

This isn’t official but I’m pretty certain there’s a fair bit of truth in this: Today my husband spoke to his relative who works for Nikon and they’ve apparently been sent information regarding a new camera (Nikon D3 – somewhere in the range of 18-22 mega-pixels) & new lenses all of which will be announced on 25th August. I’m not certain if he mentioned a full-frame sensor or if it’s going to be a 1.1 crop (my attention span on the phone is pretty bad!) Whatever the case, I hope they stick to this date for the announcement & don’t put it off for too much longer…

Maybe I should plan for some vacation time from the factory – there’s gonna be a lot of blogging to do this month if these rumors are legit.

Come on Canon and Nikon . . . I’m running out of creative names for these posts.
