Photo of the Day

Bright idea

Here’s a really cool shot. If you’d like to know more about how the photographer caught this rather unique shot, just click on the photo to see the flickr page. If you’re interested in this kind of well-thought-out/planned shoots, consider spending some time over at Strobist. It’s a great blog giving insight on lighting solutions – in particular, cost effective light solutions. For instance, the photographer of the above photo used a homemade cardboard snoot as part of his “gear” in achieving the above effect. Be warned though, it can be addictive…

Shot info: Nikon D200; 50mm; f/13 at 1/200s and ISO 100. Click on the photo for more info on lighting.

Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 DC Macro Lens Review

May 14, 2007 By Eric Reagan

Popular Photography has a test up of the highly-rated and digital only Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 macro lens:

For tabletop shooters who like to reach out from the camera position to reposition or otherwise manipulate their subject, this 1:3 macro is probably the closestfocusing lens in its class. Read more . . .

Nikon D3

May 13, 2007 By Eric Reagan

A summer announcement is reportedly due for the D2- successor, presumably a Nikon D3. That’s the story over at DPReview.com anyway. This appeared in a recent forum post:

UK Nikon rep who made her yearly visit to us at a regional awards evening last week quite bluntly in fact HOWEVER we have been assured that a new camera is imminent, a summer announcement btw, and furthermore she will deliver the new camera to us for useage in september and if it fails to be a canon mk3 beater then she’ll take them off her hands with no questions asked. When pressed on names ie d3h or x she declined to say as this has not been decided as of yet (it’s just a code number at the moment apparently) but said the camera would be at least as big file size as the current d2xs and faster than the d3hs, other than that there was no further information ie full frame etc., sorry but it was an awards evening and by the time we spoke it was fairly late on.

Canon40D.net Decides to Rip Off Content

May 11, 2007 By Eric Reagan

I always do my best to attribute the authors and sources of content that I link to here. It really chaps my rusty, however, when people take the content of others. Certainly, fair use is permitted in the blogging/news world. In fact, passing around content is generally encouraged – so long as you link back to your source. As photographers, we are particularly aware of copyright issues and proper attribution.

That said, let me take a moment to point out that canon40d.net has taken it upon itself to copy and paste the content of others with NO attribution whatsoever. Photography Bay’s recent post on the Canon 40D rumors now appears at the top of it’s page. As you can see by reading the post here on Photography Bay, canon40d.net has simply copied and pasted that post with no reference to the original post here.

Unfortunately, the site owner has not even provided a method to contact them via email or comments on the site. As a result, I’m left with no choice but to post this information here. I’m still considering whether to contact the host and issue a DMCA takedown notice, so if you’re reading this canon40D.net, you should do the right thing and create your own content and, when quoting others, properly attribute the authorship of the quoted sources. Given that the site has little original content, I’m not holding my breath.

Rather than link to canon40d.net, which improves the site’s search rankings, I’ll simply provide you with an image of the ripped off post (feel free to copy and paste the address to your browser though):

Now, read Photography Bay’s original post here.

FYI, Whois.Net provides the following info, which I have attempted to contact via email to no avail:

Nikon Reporting Record Sales

May 10, 2007 By Eric Reagan

Forbes has the info:

Nikon chief financial officer Ichiro Terato told a press conference: ‘High-margin single-lens reflex digital cameras and interchangeable lenses are selling well thanks to the aggressive release of new models such as the D-80, D-40 and D-40X.’

He remarked: ‘The entry into the SLR digital camera market of Sony (nyse: SNE – news – people ) and Matsushita Electric helped increase the size of the market.’

Nikon sold 2.09 mln SLR digital cameras in the last fiscal year, up from 1.34 mln the year before.

It sold 2.64 mln interchangeable lenses for SLR digital cameras, up from 2.02 mln.

‘Brisk sales of high-end digital cameras and interchangeable lenses more than offset sluggish sales of our compact digital cameras,’ Terato said.

Raise your hand if you have something to do with this.  I know I’ve enjoyed my new D40!

I think its pretty clear from these numbers that the release of the D40x over a D3 was more beneficial to Nikon’s bottom line.  We all want a D3 though… or two of’em.

Understanding Exposure, DIY Backdrops, Viewfinder Shots and an Itty Bitty Pretty Camera

May 10, 2007 By Eric Reagan

I’ve always recommended the book Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson because it does a great job of putting together all of the elements that go into a properly exposed photograph and explains it for the Average Joe. Consider picking up a copy. It’ll be the best $15 you spend in photography. Likewise, take a look at this resourceful tool, an interactive camera that demonstrates the effect that camera settings have on your photograph. You can see instant results for exposure and depth of field components. If you don’t quite get it yet, then check out these two useful tools for honing your skills as a photographer. If you do “get it”, I think both are probably still worth your time.

Need a backdrop and strapped for cash? Consider doing it yourself. Here’s how to.

If you haven’t read Rich Legg’s “Through the Viewfinder” post, go check it out now.  It’s pretty cool stuff!

Check out this review of the new Fuji F40fd. Fuji has finally caught on and made way for SD memory cards.  Kudos to Fuji.  For more on why that’s important, check out my prior post on Memory Cards and Cameras.  Finally, memory cards are still dirt cheap.  Even big ones.
