Canon Rebel XSi Review at Digital Trends

Digital Trends has posted a review of the 12.2 megapixel Canon EOS Rebel XSi. The new Digital Rebel XSi kit comes with an stabilized 18-55mm lens. Canon’s entry-level DSLR now features a 3″ rear LCD panel that’s capable of Live View framing and focusing. Digital Trends gave it an editor’s choice award and said:

. . . it’s very easy to recommend the Canon Rebel XSi. It’s a fast-focusing, speedy D-SLR that delivers excellent photos both indoors and outside. At 12.2-megapixels, the camera also has more than enough resolution for huge prints, and you can just shoot in auto or tweak images as much as you’d like.

Canon Rebel XSi / 450D Review at Let’s Go Digital

Let’s Go Digital has posted a review of Canon’s new EOS Digital Rebel XSi.  The popular Canon Digital Rebel series is now highlighted by this 12.2 megapixel DSLR, which also features a 3″ rear LCD panel and Live View functionality.

After testing the Canon EOS 450D I am really satisfied with the camera. It is a perfect camera for everybody. If you are just starting with (digital) photography or if you are a bit more experienced, and whether or not you switch from a compact camera, the Canon 450D enables you to take excellent pictures.

The XS makes an excellent first SLR for people more used to point-and-shoot cameras. It has automatic settings that performed well, along with Live View, which is a definite draw for the new-to-SLRs crowd, even if the auto focus system is less than ideal.

The main differences with the 400D are Live View, DIGIC III, a 7-point AF instead of a 9-point AF, auto ISO setting, unlimited JPEG buffer but a lesser amount of RAW pictures, LP-E5 battery instead of the NB-2LH and on top of that a decreased weight of 502 grams which makes the Canon EOS 1000D Canon’s lightest digital SLR camera ever.

It’s clear that Canon has found itself in a situation where they are lacking a model at the low end of the digital SLR market. While the 450D has allowed Canon to come on leaps and bounds in what it offers, an increase in features and tech has meant the 450D has become a mid-level entry-level camera rather than an entry-level entry-level model.

The EOS 1000D is remarkably similar in appearance to its marginally larger relative – the 450D. The basic shape is pretty much identical, although you will be able to spot some minor differences if you look closely enough.

Portrait Image Optimize & Face Detection Without A Computer

New and Improved Photo Lamination

Both the CP770 and CP760 photo printers feature new overcoat technology to help reduce blurring, and fingerprint smudges. After the yellow, magenta and cyan colors have printed, a special overcoat layer is applied to the image through a proprietary lamination process. I’m very pleased (actually somewhat surprised) with the improvements delivered by the Canon EOS Rebel XSi / 450D. It will be a worthwhile upgrade for many XTi / 400D owners – it is a lot of camera for the money for anyone purchasing it.

Canon Rebel XSi Review at Steve’s Digicams

Steve’s Digicams has posted a review of the new 12.2 megapixel Canon Rebel XSi.

The XSi’s image quality is excellent, and has improved at high ISO settings over the former model. Images were consistently well exposed with natural color saturation and accurate white balance. When shooting portrait style photos, skin tones were also very pleasant. Noise is absent from test images shot at ISO 100 and ISO 200, barely detectable in shadow areas at ISO 400 and 800, and noticeable in shadow areas at ISO 1600, but these images are still very usable.

New Canon 5D Mark II and 1D Mark IIIn Rumor – June 2008

Just when we thought rumors had died off for the Canon 5D Mark II and 1D Mark IIIn, up crops another over at the FredMiranda.com forums.  This one seems pretty weak on its face; however, Yakim (the poster) has been around for quite some time and generally has a pretty good ear to the ground for upcoming gear.  Still yet, take it with a grain of salt.

The source is an old Israeli photographer which shoots Nikon, has a vast collection of Nikon equipment and has some internal knowledge in Nikon and Canon (a little). FWIW, he is well respected in Israel and is considered a reliable source.

Canon EOS-1D Mark III Firmware Update Version 1.2.3

Canon has updated the firmware for the 1D Mark III to Version 1.2.3.

This firmware update (Version 1.2.3) incorporates the following improvements.

  1. Includes the following new features that were frequently requested by customers to the new firmware.
    1. Direct selection of AF points by the Multi-controller is added to C.Fn III-9.
    2. Alternate access to Exposure compensation is added to C.Fn IV-3.
    3. With the camera’s External Speedlite control menu, Flash function settings can be used to set the Wireless setting and Zoom.
  2. Improves the stability of AF accuracy in AI servo AF when shooting extremely low-contrast subjects.

The Version 1.2.3 firmware being released this time is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.1.3. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.2.3, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
