May 10, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Olympus PEN E-P5

Today is the 50th anniversary of the Olympus PEN F, which makes it fitting for Olympus to introduce the new PEN E-P5 as a digital version of the classic PEN F.

The E-P5 features built-in Wi-Fi, autofocus advancements, easy-access manual controls and 1/8000s shutter speed, which is a first for compact system cameras. [Read more…]

May 9, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Several more images of the Olympus E-P5 have leaked out ahead of Friday’s announcement as a long-awaited replacement for the Olympus E-P3.  The camera is rumored to feature the same 16MP sensor as found in the Olympus OM-D E-M5 and is modeled after the old Olympus PEN F film camera from yesteryear. The E-P5 can also capture full HD 1080/30p video at 20Mbps bit rate and should include built-in WiFi. [Read more…]

More Olympus E-P5 Images Leak Out

May 1, 2013 By Eric Reagan

The upcoming Olympus E-P5 is turning out to be a very poorly kept secret. The first photo of the new Micro Four Thirds camera leaked out last week, and now we have three more images.

The E-P5’s controls have undergone somewhat of a change from the layout of the E-P3‘s controls. And to confirm the model name, note the branding in the top image (see bottom right corner) with the model ‘E-P5’ inscribed on the camera. [Read more…]

Olympus PEN E-P5 Leaks Out

April 25, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Olympus E-P5

After yesterday’s teaser from Olympus of a new PEN camera due out in early May, the Olympus E-P5 appears to have leaked out ahead of its official announcement. As previously rumored, it closely resembles the design of the old Olympus PEN F.

The Olympus PEN E-P5 is expected to be announced by May 11, 2013. The camera is rumored to feature the same 16MP sensor as found in the Olympus OM-D E-M5. Additional rumors suggest an improved AF speed that will best the highly-regarded E-M5.

Personally, I think this is one very attractive camera – even more so if the AF speed is as fast as rumored.

Olympus Teases New PEN Camera, Due on May 11

Olympus PEN Teaser Campaign 2013

Olympus’ Chinese website is teasing a silhouette of a new PEN model that it has dated for a May 11, 2013 unveiling. The Olympus E-P5 and E-PL6 were previously rumored to be next on the PEN release schedule.

The Olympus PEN E-P3 is nearly 2-years old and no longer in production, while the E-PL5 was just announced in September 2012.

Olympus E-P5 and E-PL6 Coming Soon…?

April 23, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Olympus E-PL5

Recent rumors suggest that Olympus will be updating its E-Px and E-PLx series soon. The next generation should carry the logical names of E-P5 and E-PL6, which obviously would serve as replacements for the E-P3 (the number ‘4’ is considered bad luck in Japanese culture) and E-PL5, respectively.

New Olympus PEN Taking on New “PEN F” Design?

March 3, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Olympus PEN F

New rumors over at Photo Rumors point to an upcoming Olympus PEN Micro Four Thirds model that will follow closely to the design of the old PEN F film camera. Additional rumors suggest a built-in viewfinder, which would be a welcomed feature on the mirrorless model.

No other details on specs are being tossed around at this time; however, such a camera would presumably reside at the top of the PEN line-up while the E-PM and E-PL series rounded out the low- and mid-range PEN options. It’s been a couple of years since we’ve seen a new top-level camera in the PEN series (the E-P3 in 2011, which is now discontinued).

Reasonable expectations for a release time frame would be Summer 2013.

Olympus M.ZUIKO ED 75-300mm f4.8-6.7 II Lens Officially Unveiled

January 30, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Olympus M.ZUIKO ED 75-300mm f4.8-6.7 II

Olympus has officially announced its new M.ZUIKO ED 75-300mm f4.8-6.7 II lens for Micro Four Thirds mount. The lens has been designed to match the OM-D E-M5 and PEN Micro Four Thirds series cameras. Olympus added a new advancedZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating to keep scratches off, and eliminate ghosting and lens flare.

The new 75-300mm lens offers a reach equivalent to 150-600mm when used on Micro Four Thirds cameras with their 2x crop factor. The M.ZUIKO ED 75-300mm f4.8-6.7 II lens should be available in March at a retail price of $549.99. Check availability here at B&H Photo.

January 26, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Blackmagic Design, “Kodak” and Others Join Micro Four Thirds System Standards Group

January 22, 2013 By Eric Reagan

BMCC Micro Four Thirds

It has been close to 5 years since the introduction of the Micro Four Thirds system by Olympus in August 2008. In that time, cameras from Olympus and Panasonic have developed a strong hold on the mirrorless camera market.

Now, five additional manufacturers are joining the Micro Four Thirds System Standards Group, two of which we have heard recent news about.

  1. Blackmagic Design
  2. JK Imaging
  3. Photron Limited
  4. SVS-Vistek
  5. ViewPLUS

Blackmagic previously announced the Blackmagic Cinema Camera in a Micro Four Thirds mount, which followed the initial Canon EF mount BMCC version. Additionally, JK Imaging recently reveals plans to bring a Kodak Micro Four Thirds camera to market through its licensed use of the Kodak brand.

More details in the complete press release below. [Read more…]
