Ready to Digitize Old School Images?

September 19, 2008 By Thursday Bram

If you took photographs before digital cameras became prevalent, it’s quite possible that you have full slide carousels sitting around. You can scan those slides and create digital images, but it tends to be a time consuming task. I once had the chore of scanning in a full carousel by hand, and I wouldn’t wish that task on anyone.

If you’re planning to scan a whole bunch of slides, it might be worth investing in a slide scanner, like the Slides 2 PC scanner. Ion Audio makes this sub-$100 scanner that digitizes slides automatically at 5 megapixels. Up until recently, dedicated slide scanners have been horribly expensive. Despite the low price, the Slides 2 PC seems like a good little machine and worth the price.

Pentax Optio W60 Review at Digital Camera Info

September 18, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Digital Camera Info has posted a review of the Pentax Optio W60.

The Pentax takes the worry out of these situations, and for many users that’s going to be worth a few extra dollars compared to a less rugged camera with otherwise similar features. Image quality is adequate if not outstanding, but good enough for the point-and-shoot task at hand.

Pansonic Lumix DMC-FX500 Review at Imaging Resource

September 18, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Imaging Resource has posted a review of the Panasonic Lumix FX500. The FX500 is a 10.1 megapixel point & shoot camera with a 5x wide angle lens.  It also features Panasonic’s O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization).

A fun camera with a few overkill features, the Panasonic FX500 captures very good color and detail marred only by a tendency to over-optimize flat color, and a tendency for noise even at the lowest ISO setting.

Lowepro Flipside 400 AW

September 18, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Recently, Lowepro added to the popular Flipside series with a new all weather pack – the Flipside 400 AW.  Previous Lowepro Flipside bags include the Flipside 200 and Flipside 300.

The Flipside bags are great for packing your gear in crowded areas due to the unique design of access zipper.  The compartment in which you pack your camera can only be opened from the portion of the bag that rests on your back.

This means that a would-be thief in a crowd can’t get to your goods if they are behind you.  The bag has to come off your shoulders to take the camera out.

The Flipside 400 AW is currently available for $149.95 US.  It’s available in black and green from Amazon.com. [Read more…]

Nikon D90 Review at DC Resource

September 18, 2008 By Eric Reagan

DC Resource has posted its review of the new Nikon D90.

Photo quality was excellent. The D90 took well-exposed photos with pleasing, accurate colors. Images have the smooth look that is a D-SLR trademark, though plenty of detail is still captured. The D90 really impressed me at high ISOs.
