I told you it was coming when the Photography Bay Forum launched.  This is the first giveaway for forum members.  (The second giveaway is already in the works too.)

What’s Up for Grabs?

Back in July, Thursday Bram reviewed the Complete Idiot’s Guide to Photography Essentials here on Photography Bay. (See Review)  Since Thursday liked the book so much, I decided to contact the publisher to see if they wanted to sponsor a giveaway for Photography Bay readers.

Good news . . . I’ve got 5 brand spanking new copies to give away to Photography Bay readers – for free.

How Can I Win?

All you have to enter is be an active Photography Bay forum member.  Existing active members are already eligible to win.  If you are not a member, head on over, register and join in the discussions.

In summary, there are two things you need to do:

  1. Be a forum member
  2. Make at least one worthwhile post in the forum between now and September 19th

A worthwhile post is something that adds to a discussion or starts a discussion.  A spammy post will qualify you from winning anything. Additionally, only forum posts will qualify – blog comments do not apply to this contest.

This should be pretty straight forward; however, for the avoidance of doubt:  Critique requests, questions about your gear, speculations on rumors, and so on are valid posts.  Saying “You suck” or “Visit my site for free viagra” is not a worthwhile post.

Prize Announcement and Details

I will use a random drawing to determine the winners.  The winners will be announced by their forum usernames on September 20th on the front page of Photography Bay.  I will also contact those members by the email used to register in the forum for shipping information.  Photography Bay will cover the shipping charges to anywhere in the world that you are legally permitted to receive prizes from contests/drawings.

Winners will have one week to reply with valid contact information.  If I don’t receive a response, the prize will go to another forum member.

Canon Evolution Phase 2 & September 17 = D-Day

Canon has revealed just a little bit more of the mystery camera (aka, Canon 5D Mark II).  See this post for the original tease.

Nothing groundbreaking, but it appears that Canon is going to tease us all the way to the announcement of the new camera(s).

Finally, Neutral Day picked up a Canon announcement date of September 17 from Kamera & Bild.

And, yes Canon, we bit – hook, line and sinker.  You have our attention.

iLovePhotos Does the Hard Work

Most photographers have plenty of photos that they need to keep organized — and they upload more all the time. But what if you had a photo program that could use facial recognition and visual tagging to cut down on the work you have to do? That’s exactly what iLovePhotos does, even to the point of allowing you to set up automatic emails for tags.

Unfortunately, iLovePhotos is still in a private beta. You can request an invite on their site, though, and it seems likely that they’ll be sending out a batch of invites soon. The software was officially launched today at DEMOfall 08.

Leaf Launches Medium Format Line

Leaf, known for its medium format digital cameras, has developed an entirely new line based on photographers’ features wish lists. The Belgian camera maker has incorporated several features into the new line: 56 megapixel resolution, ‘True Wide Frame’ sensors, the Leaf Verto internal sensor for changing orientation and the Leaf SensorFlex technology that allows photographers to pre-select capture speed and image size.

The new line is made up of six new products: the Leaf AFi-II 6, 7 and 10 digital camera systems and the Leaf Aptus-II 6, 7 and 10 digital camera backs. Leaf plans to debut its new product line at Photokina.

New Canon DSLR with 1080P Video

Several rumors have been circulating over the past several weeks that Canon will release a video-capable DSLR near Photokina.  RED recently let us in on its development plans for a DSLR replacement camera.

Yesterday, RED pushed the button a little harder stating:

While (insert code name) is not a replacement for Epic or Scarlet, it is strategically targeted at the DSLR space. As Nikon and Canon release their 720P and 1080P, respectively, DSLRs with video capture… RED has a more advanced view of the future. We look forward to rapidly pushing the “big guys” along in feature sets and capabilities.

We know the Nikon D90 shoots HD video at 720P.  Either RED is speculating or they know something we don’t about Canon; however, that’s pretty specific points to “speculate” about.  Sounds like somebody knows something to me.

Will the 5D Mark II be the Canon camera with 1080P video capture?

Canon Powershot Reviews at PhotographyBLOG

PhotographyBLOG has posted reviews for the Canon Powershot A1000 and A2000 digital cameras.

I reviewed both cameras at the same time and actually preferred the slightly cheaper A1000 model in many ways. Although offering a smaller 2.5 LCD screen and shorter 4x zoom lens, the A1000 is noticeably smaller and lighter, has a true optical viewfinder, and benefits from having a curved hand-grip area.

PhotographyBLOG on the A2000:

Beginners will love it – the A2000 is a camera that produces excellent images in good light, covers a large focal range for such a small camera thanks to the 6x zoom lens, and has a massive 3 inch LCD screen on the back that can be viewed from a wide angle.

Sony A900 Officially Announced

After months of anticipation building among Sony Alpha followers, today Sony officially announced the 24 megapixel A900 DSLR. For the moment, Sony stands alone atop the megapixel hill of DSLRs.

The DSLR-A900 body will be available in November for about $3,000.
