Lots of product shots and details on the new ELPH models below.
New Canon PowerShot ELPH Naming Convention
At CES 2011, Canon briefed me on the new naming convention for these ELPH models and the reasoning behind it. Previously, these ELPH models were known as the “SDxxxx IS” series. Canon has dropped the “SD” moniker due to the fact that all ELPH models now exclusively use SD-format memory cards and there is no longer a need to make a distinction. Likewise for the “IS” moniker, all future ELPH models will feature Canon’s Image Stabilization and, therefore, it is no longer necessary to distinguish ELPH models that do and don’t offer Image Stabilization.
The ELPH line has also adopted Canon’s new “HS” suffix for the purpose of highlighting the cameras’ “High Sensitivity” that comes by virtue of Canon CMOS sensors and DIGIC 4 image processor.
Canon PowerShot ELPH 500 HS
The Canon PowerShot ELPH 500 HS is the successor to the SD3500 IS and SD4000 IS. The SD4500 will stay in the PowerShot ELPH lineup for the time being. The ELPH 500 HS features a 12.1MP CMOS sensor, Canon’s DIGIC 4 image processor, 1080p HD video capture and a 3.2-inch touchscreen LCD. The ELPH 500 HS also features a bright f/2.0 lens with a 4.4x zoom (approx 24-150mm equivalent). The ELPH 500 HS should be available in March at an initial retail price of $299.99.
