onOne Software has launched an iPad version of its DSLR Camera Remote App, which allows you to use the iPad to trigger your Canon or Nikon DSLR’s shutter, review images, adjust settings and more.

I have bought this app some time ago. Tried it out and it worked, sort of! The delay in response is a couple of seconds, so you would NEVER get the fake illustration action shot of a sports event.
You could use it for studio product shots, macro or for static portraits.
