B&H has the new Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Pancake lens in stock and now shipping. Given the size and the $199 price, I expect this to be a very popular little lens.
I’m not familiar with this type of lens (I do like the 2.8) … can ya clue me in?
Thanks!

Same with me. I’ve been watching the information come out on this lens, but I’ve never heard of a pancake lens before. What’s the “why for” on this?
Jaysays
OK. I went to the Canon site and read the product overview. Makes sense.

Everything old is new again! Back in the 1960s, when CANON had the PELLIX in their product line, they had a 38mm lens, which could be called a “pancake” lens, since it was very short. It was designated as the FLP 38, but was specifically designed for the PELLIX, since that had a stationary pellicle mirror, so part of the lens could encroach in the chamber normally reserved fro the swinging mirror.
